Rising Stars: Meet Rachel Dunlop of SoDo District in Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dunlop.

Hi Rachel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a family of artists and was always encouraged to follow my passions. Just like my mom, I was drawn to photography from a young age. Growing up in Los Angeles, I spent all of my time in high school shooting for the school paper and yearbook, all while learning darkroom techniques in photography class. After high school, I was incredibly lucky to be able to attend Parsons the New School for Design to complete my undergrad studying photography. During that time, I not only learned further darkroom and digital techniques, but was able to learn printmaking and video editing as well. Post graduation in 2015, I ended up moving out to Orlando for an internship with Disney.

After a few years working at Disney as a photographer, I was able to take advantage of their education program and work towards my Masters in Arts and Culture Marketing and Management from University of Denver. With the introduction of the pandemic, I was soon furloughed and then laid off from my job. With this sudden and dramatic change in my life, I finally realized it was my chance to begin my journey as a full time photographer. Over the last few months, my business has grown and I have been so lucky to capture so many milestone moments for clients. While it is still hard work, I feel so incredibly lucky to be doing what I am passionate about for a living.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest issues I dealt with on my journey of becoming a full time photographer has been self-doubt. It is so easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to other’s success. For years before I took the leap, I always had so many fears and worries about what could go wrong running through my mind. Comparing myself in my worst moments to other’s best and curated moments online was one of my bad habits. Once I took time to gain self-confidence and value my own self-worth, I was able to finally fulfill my major career goal.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a portrait photographer, specializing in general portraits and couples. During my sessions, I love getting to know my client’s stories and working with them to create images that reflect their experiences and special occasions. One think that I am most proud of is that I am always learning and growing! I am constantly pushing myself to try new techniques, find new locations, and push myself to be the best artist that I can be.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Put yourself out there! Over the years, I have had the chance to assist and learn from countless folks. Reaching out to photographers or artists you like and offering to assist or just learn from them as they are in action is priceless. Another tip I have is constantly supporting and learning from your peers. Especially in the Orlando area, there is a great community of fellow artists and vendors that are dealing with the same struggles or situations that you are. Don’t be afraid to compliment or hype up your peers!
