Today we’d like to introduce you to Libo Garcia.
Hi Libo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Mexico. I have always been a very curious person and love learning new things. Growing up, I was always the kid taking apart stuff in the house just to see how it worked. As a young adult, I enjoyed making things with my hands so I would collect any tool I could find. Specially if it had to be restored before I could use it. Friends and family would ask me to fix or make things for them and it was always fun.
When I moved permanently to Orlando after getting married, I kept talking about all the things I wanted to make and the tools I wanted to buy. During our first Christmas together, my lovely wife gifted me a table saw. Best gift ever!!! However, I don’t think she ever expected this to grow so much. I started researching and learning more and more about the tools I have and others I could use. I found cheap ones, used ones, deals on new ones. I always want to know more, so I started learning other skills, finding new materials and combining everything together to create more things.
For over eight years, I have been honing skills in woodworking, woodturning, resins, plastics, metal, leather, CAD Design, paint and even electronics. I enjoy solving problems using my skills and my tools. Designing and building custom solutions takes me to a “better place,” and it is my “way out” from stress. Though this was a very treasured hobby, during the pandemic of 2020, it turned into a job and the way to pay the bills while I was furloughed from my primary job.
Libo’s Workshop started as a way to learn and express myself but turned into a busy custom designs small business. During the pandemic, I had amazing customers that even after finding out I had a queue, decided to wait for me to make their custom requests. I have recently been called back to work and though it will be a little harder to manage time, Libo’s Workshop will continue to create custom designs and hopefully grown into a bigger business in the future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always bumps along the road, but most of the time, it is part of the fun.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do all sorts of custom work with several materials, but most often, I work with wood. Though I’m highly known for my woodwork, I specialize in making things that are difficult to make. I love figuring out solutions to uncommon problems.
I am proud of many things, but I think that the way I can combine several skills and disciplines to solve problems to make things I have never made before excites me the most. I think that my attention to detail sets me apart from the rest. I am a perfectionist and I work hard to finish a project the best way possible. As they say “the money is in detail,” so a job well done gives me satisfaction.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest and any other site that show me what others are making and that gives me ideas that trigger my creativity. Audible, I often listen to all kinds of books. Mostly books that could teach me something while I’m working.
