Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanay Ulett.
Hi Shanay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Keepcalmnaturals is an eco-friendly beauty business my small business started during the pandemic on June 18, 2020, in hopes of becoming successful. Some of the products I sold were Jade Rollers, Gua Shas, and Boba Tea Earrings (boba tea is a famous Japanese drink with black pearls commonly known as boba). The two main products that were very popular and sold really well were the boba tea earrings and the Jade Roller and Gua Sha kit. The Jade Roller and Gua Sha contain one Green Jade Roller, one green Gua Sha, one eyelash comb, one mud mask applicator, and a complimentary makeup bag. I first started selling on eBay and Etsy. I chose to sell on Etsy because there are millions of people that shop there every day so it makes it easier to get traffic. I had over 80 sales on Etsy during 2020 and early 2021. I started to expand and have my own website back in February 2021 because I wanted to reach out to more people. I also started to market my products on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. My main targeted shoppers were young and older women that wanted to improve their skin. For years, I have been trying to find a natural way to get rid of my blackheads, puffy eyes, and acne. I have been using Jade Rollers for over 2 years and saw huge results. I wanted to share my accomplishments with other women in hopes that it will benefit them as much as it benefited me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My business had its ups and downs along the way. Some of the biggest accomplishments I had with keepcalmnaturals were being able to know my targeted customers, being able to make 100 sales, building trust with customers, learning how to market, and also enjoying selling products that I use and love. When I first started the business, I didn’t know my targeted audience was I thought that my products were for everyone and didn’t market my products to cater to who I am attracting, with made it hard to get traffic and sales. It took a couple of months for people to start looking at my shop and start buying from me. I had to learn how to market instead of just posting photos of my products. I started to post educational content and videos to show my customers how to use my products and how they would benefit them. I also did have challenges that I am also facing today. Some of the challenges were not getting enough sales, low traffic, and coming up with different products. Back in 2020, I started to get increasing good sales but this year my sales kind of when down after I started working my second job. I have two jobs which do make it hard for me to balance business and work life. I work part-time on my business and I try to post on my social media as much as I can. When it comes to traffic, it does need work because I have not had a lot of time to post videos every week on YouTube. I will be starting to sell skincare creams and soaps for the face and body soon. I am now working on how to improve and fit it which the products that I am doing now. I am happy that I gained more knowledge now and learned from my previous mistakes. I improve every day with my business and be as consistent as possible. Balance is key to growing my business and patience. I try not to compare myself with other business owners and not rush my results because everyone is different and has their only way to gain sales.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have always wanted to have my own business since high school. I first started off having my business in high school selling chips and candy. It helped me because I gained a lot of entrepreneurial Experience that I used on my business such as upselling and convincing others on why they should buy your products. My major in college was business management and real estate. I had graduated from Valencia College with my associate’s degree. What sets me apart from others is that I try to be more unique and not do what everyone else is doing. I want to improve myself and grow with my business. My business had changed me as a person because it symbolizes patience and rewarding income because you are your own boss and you can make as much money as you want.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The characteristics that are important to my success is patience, independence, wanting to learn new things, learn from mistakes, and exploring new ways of doing things.
