Hidden Gems: Meet Alexa Parks of Deaf Dog Bandana Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Parks.

Hi Alexa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had always wanted to have my own Etsy shop, but I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to create. After adopting our deaf pup, Lola in 2018, I was inspired to make her bandanas. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed making them and how passionate I was to make cute bandanas with unique designs. I decided it was time to open an Etsy shop to sell the bandanas I was making. While brainstorming ideas, I knew I wanted to use my shop not only to sell bandanas but also to advocate. I named it Deaf Dog Bandana Co, inspired by my Lola, but also to bring awareness to how incredible deaf dogs are. Over the past two years, Deaf Dog Bandana Co has grown into so much more than just an Etsy shop. I never could have dreamed of the friendships, connections, and community that has come along with it. Deaf Dog Bandana Co brings me so much joy, and I feel so lucky that I get to do something I am so passionate about.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting my shop started was the biggest challenge. There are so many awesome shops that sell dog bandanas, so I knew I had to find a way to stand out. I decided to make all of my bandanas reversible, with both sides being equally as stylish. Another challenge was that Deaf Dog Bandana Co opened only about six months before Covid-19 began. Once quarantine started, it was difficult to get the supplies I needed to maintain my shop. Though it was a tough couple of months, we made it through and now offer more designs than ever before.

As you know, we’re big fans of Deaf Dog Bandana Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Deaf Dog Bandana Co makes reversible, over the collar dog bandanas in unique, modern designs.

Any big plans?
Our future plans include more advocacy for deaf (and other special needs dogs), human rights, and putting an end to breed-specific legislation. My hope is that Deaf Dog Bandana Co will continue to grow, allowing me to offer more products and more designs. We are also looking forward to being vendors at local events in the near future!
