Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Martinez.
Gaby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Also known as yummygabs 🙂
I am a foodie, traveler, and student. I grew up in Oviedo, Florida, a small town and went to the University of Central Florida to study Hospitality. I have always had a passion for travel, food and just sharing life with others. I was furloughed during the pandemic last year, and I had more time on my hands. I love eating and going to new places, so I decided to share this on Instagram and create yummygabs. I was shocked to see so many people were reaching out to me, asking for my recommendations on where to go in Orlando and just sharing their life stories with me. I honestly always so grateful for the platform it has given me, the opportunity to eat amazing food and enjoy it with great company. Where I am today, I would say I am happy, posting what makes me happy, and I truly want to be a blogger that is always honest about the food and experiences they have.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes, there is always struggles, but if you don’t try for your dreams then you don’t grow as a person.
This year was a lot, it was probably a lot for everyone, especially with covid-19.
I had a lot on my plate this year, I have a full-time job while pursuing my MBA and trying to post on social media for my blog. It was not easy, I really had to manage my time and learn to take breaks for my own well-being.
But for me, the biggest struggle was my relationship with social media and food. Social Media has its positives and negatives. It can be addicting but it also can give you many opportunities. I really do take breaks from social media and post what really makes me happy and try not to care as much about negative comments. This is always a work in progress.
My relationship with food is also a work in progress. In the past, I have had obsessions with staying fit, counting calories, stressing about my weight. It was not healthy and when I started my food blog, it was hard for me to maintain my perfectionist lifestyle while also eating out. I was very stressed because I wanted to be seen as perfect, someone who doesn’t gain weight. But this isn’t reality, I had to learn how to maintain a healthy relationship with food. Mental Health is so important, and that is why I have learned to eat when I am full and to really prioritize my own well-being before any blog.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Sharing foodie finds all over Orlando and am constantly on the move to explore new places and eat fantastic food. I work with brands to help them reach a larger audience. I am very flexible and try to accommodate any brand.
I would love to possibly in the future would love to create my own alcohol brand.
What sets me apart is that I am foodie that is also a musician, a little fact about me is that I play the piano and sing. Maybe one day, I will create a music Instagram page.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Reach out to people who have the same interests as you.
You cannot be successful overnight, keep going, that has worked well for me.
