Today we’d like to introduce you to Rooloph Rene.
Hi Rooloph, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I wanted to be a lawyer at first but Photography decided otherwise. I started doing photography in Haiti in 2013 after having my first bachelor’s in Law in accordance with the jurisdictional system of Haiti. A caring friend of mine, Charles-Nery Mercier who died recently told me: “Rooloph, you are really good at photographing people. I think that you can develop yourself; you just need to be determined enough to get what you want.” So, I listened to him, did a lot of research on photography, and attended a lot of workshops, meetups, and photography classes in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In the beginning, I created a lot of photo meetups in my town cause back in 2014, no one else was doing this kind of activity. That brings a lot of young folks to develop a passion for photography and it also helped me to perfect my craft.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Most of the struggles I had were when people saying that look at this guy abandoning a great career as a lawyer for photography. But as I always say, It’s more important to understand someone than to judge them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am mostly known in the Haitian community in Florida for capturing family moments and weddings.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I learned is to always satisfy your clients because that is what keeps you in business.
