Hi Meiyko, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Meiyko Milan the owner and CEO of Milan Aesthetics & Beauty Lounge located in Apopka, FL. My passion for all things pink, girly and pretty began as a child so beauty became a part of who I am. Growing up in South Apopka and the only girl in the house, I was always treated like the princess of the family. Although I was spoiled and loved everything surrounding Fashion and Beauty, I also dealt with some of my own insecurities from a teenager and how I felt about certain parts of my body. I would focus more on my hair, nails, makeup, and clothing; what I didn’t focus on was my inner self. I was a master at creating beauty on the outside so entering High School, I found my niche that I grew to love. I’d style my friends and family with the latest fashions then style their hair, seeing firsthand how I increased their confidence by enhancing their appearance. Their excitement made me extremely happy to see how I impacted changing one’s life. As real-life began to set in, I became a teen mother at the age of 17. Over the course of years, after having three daughters my body changed even more. I worked out but wasn’t consistent, I tried different fad diets and would even starve myself but never got the results I wanted. I’d look high and low for other alternatives, but they were either extremely expensive or I’d have to consider surgical procedures which I was a little leery of because of the many horror stories read and heard…
I began my career as a pharmacy technician, working in the medical field alongside pharmacists, doctors, nurses, and surgeons for over 15 years. At one point, I wanted to become a nurse and attended college for the Nursing program. While in my pre-nursing courses, I could not ignore the fact that I had an undeniable love for the beauty industry which inspired me to eventually attend Beauty School in hopes of someday to open a Beauty Spa/Med Spa due to me having experience in both the beauty industry and medical field. I come from a family of entrepreneurs, and it’s always been a dream to own a business doing what I love most, making others look and feel beautiful. After graduating Beauty School, one of the main questions that I would ask myself would be if I opened a business “exactly what type of products or services would I provide?” I didn’t want to open a typical salon; I wanted something more, something different, something fun but also something that aligned with my passion in the beauty industry and helping others. With the help of one of my best friends and some extensive research I found the top-rated Body Sculpting training program in New York and decided to fly there and receive the education and knowledge to be the #1 Body Sculpting Technician in Orlando and the Central Florida region. Body Sculpting treatments are so interesting because it takes a different approach to losing unwanted fat/weight while also naturally reshaping the body without downtime or complications. From my own personal experiences with Body Sculpting, it was something that worked for me in the past and something new that I could bring to the area where I was born and raised, Apopka, FL. I felt this was a service that many could benefit from whether male or female. Here I am today, first black-owned Spa in the city and the first black female offering Non-Invasive Body Sculpting services in the city of Apopka, FL.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been an easy road to open my business; I literally had to begin from the ground up. I was working for a pharmaceutical company when I decided that I was going to step out on faith and become an entrepreneur. I strategically planned, saved, and then made my way into entrepreneurship. Just like the start of any new business, there were some bumps in the road. From finding the perfect location to planning my grand opening, it was a financial struggle because I did this all alone, no loans and as a single parent. I have the most beautiful daughters who gave me strength when I thought I had no energy to keep going. Knowing they were watching me transform an outdated five room Dr’s office into a luxury Spa was inspiration by itself. My amazing parents and a few friends stood right beside me through this process as well and made the road easier to ride. Opening my business has exceeded all my expectations and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world. The old cliche “it takes money to make money” is an understatement but I thank God every day for his grace, mercy and for my family supporting me physically and mentally along the way.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The advice that I would give to someone trying to find a mentor would be to find someone who’s well established in the same or similar business that you are trying to open. For a new business owner, it’s imperative that you constantly educate yourself to stay afloat of what’s new and the changes that are happening within your industry. Collaborate with individuals that you can connect with on all things business to assist in your brand growth. For my business, it is important that I remain in contact with those who have supplied me with knowledge and various trainings so that I can be beneficial with helping my clients maintain what we’ve accomplished or even changing course of treatment as needed for their most optimal results long term.
