Meet Lissa Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lissa Turner.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m from Salisbury, North Carolina where I learned from my experiences to survive and have a mind of my own. To be a leader My hometown made me want more for myself. Education, modeling, creating saved my life. I started modeling because I didn’t see people that looked like me in the industry. I had low self-esteem as a child and taking photos was an outlet to do more and to become more. My love for movies came from my childhood with my daddy. We always went to the movies. I fall in love with storytelling. I went to North Carolina A&T for Media Production for my degree. Now, I’m getting my master’s at Full Sail for Film. A dream comes true. Now, I’m a model, actress, director, a social media manager.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? No. If things were easy; I wouldn’t have a story to tell. Being plus-sized and dark-skinned was always something I had to deal with on regular. I believe in myself that all matter. People calling me fat and I used to messed with me a lot especially coming from people I loved and cared for. All I need is a chance I built my own table and people want to sit–can. My father taught me early on that I was beautiful that the only opinion I cared about. I had my manager called my body disgusting I’m made sure she eat those words.

Salisbury, my hometown made me who I’m thankful for that place. The killings/people dying in my hometown caused me worked harder on my dream. The people that I knew who were rooting me. They looked out for me, took care of me, made sure I was safe. I would never forget them.

I’m a rape victim. I’m made sure I’m always here for the safety of women especially when I’m out and about. It’s important that we are safe. I feel like most men don’t protect us enough, and it’s sad.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Actress
Creative Director

Stylist
Social Media Manager
PR for a music company
Songwriter
Rapper

I’m proud to be the first one in my family graduating college getting my master’s beating the odds. I could have been dead. I’m just happy I can tell it.

Being a plus-sized girl being picked in music videos and being in the limelight, somebody got to do it. I do it for the people who are scared or the people that will judge. I’m glad people see something in me to do so.

What were you like growing up?
I was a homeboy. I hate dresses. I am a nerd a book was always in my hand. I always read up on something. Numerology spirituality and astrology was my thing before it became a trend. I was always asking questions. I want to know why people act the way they do. As a child, I was very giving. I was always giving away my food at the daycare I was at. I was always helping someone in need. I love having fun but I was shy. I didn’t talk much but now you can shut me up. I’m thankful for my father for teaching me to be a good person and not to use people. I honestly think I would have been an awful person without him.
