Exploring Life & Business with Marissa Burns of The Cheap Chic Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Burns.

Hi Marissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The story of the Cheap Chic Life began (as all the best adventures do) with a spunky woman and a dream!

One day she declared, “I am starting a business. And you can do it with me if you want.” And so began our business journey, me and the spunky woman I call Mom.

My sassy, 69 years old mother is a former model, clothing designer, and national brand fashion director. It was her desire to get back in the “biz” that sparked the idea for our joint business as personal stylists and boutique owners.

We both battle auto-immune diseases and know first hand the uplifting power that getting dressed can have on our mood and our emotional health. When you feel good in your clothes… you feel good. We want to help other women experience that uplifting power too.

We believe that everyBody has unique beauty and we love working with our clients to highlight that and help them share it with the world.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
While starting a business later in life, or with young children at home (or with your daughter/mom for that matter!) does present some interesting challenges and growing pains, we welcome them. We feel blessed to get to share this journey with each other. We count it as an incredible gift from God to get to navigate the journey as business partners and family. It is an honor to work alongside each other to serve and empower other woman to be their best.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Cheap Chic Life?
Our time interacting with clients in the fashion industry has revealed to us something revolutionary. If you talk with any woman for 5 minutes about her clothes, you will end up talking about something much, much deeper.

We have experienced the encouraging power that style can have on your outlook and your life. And we want to share that feeling with everyone! Personal stylists are no longer only for the elite few! The Cheap Chic Chicks are breaking barriers and bringing our styling skills to women everywhere. With our approachable, affordable styling advice, we use our expertise to customize looks for your unique body, budget, and lifestyle.

We offer personal styling packages, shopping services, and an affordable online boutique with unique, easy-to-wear clothes and accessories. We also love sharing motivational content and styling advice on social media and in our newsletters. We want to give women the power to feel their best by getting dressed.

What does success mean to you?
I think entrepreneurs are in a…situation. One that is unique to this always connected, digital generation.

Have you heard the story about a younger woman asking an older woman how she manages to “do it all?” How is she able to keep all the balls in the air? And the older woman replies, some balls are glass and some are plastic.

Today it is not enough to simply run a business. You now have to run a business AND run a business so that people can watch you run a business. The presence of social media has done incredibly valuable things for the entrepreneur. But it’s also doubled our necessary skill set and our workload.

I think the pressure to keep “all the balls in the air”- from work demands to family life, has left so many feeling overextended. And if I am honest, I get there too sometimes. So to me, the definition of success is treating glass like glass and plastic like plastic.

We want to do what is most important well. We succeed by serving our families and our clients with our whole hearts.

If we can empower even a few women to recognize their own unique beauty and begin to step into that and own it by dressing with confidence, then we are accomplishing our mission. And we claim that as success!
