Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin “kPod” Podmeyer.
Hi Kevin “kPod”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a big part of my life; some of my earliest memories include dancing around the house with my mom listening to Gloria Estefan or my dad grilling out back with some Beatles cranked all the way up. I started playing the drums and making music with friends when I was about 12 years old, but as time went on friends lost their interest in music so I ended up embarking on my own journey. Being rhythmically inclined, I decided to take my drumming skills into linguistics and started writing rhymes to hip-hop beats. After a few years of rhyming under my belt, I finally decided to tap into my inner-drummer and started producing hip-hop music as well, so I’ve officially been a hip-hop artist/producer since approximately 2018. The nickname “K-Pod” was given to me during high school and it kind of stuck, so I figured it made my dilemma of deciding on an artist name pretty easy. Lastly, I style it as “kPod” because it looks different plus it resembles “iPod” and I’m all about the music!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The entertainment industry, especially music, is extremely competitive and there are so many talented people out there. I think a lot of people originally get into it because it’s fun and exciting, but then soon realize how much work you actually have to put in. As an independent artist, you’re your own manager, agent, marketer, promoter, publicist, writer, hype man, plus a few more hats to wear… Not to mention, working a full-time job has a tendency to get in the way of the creative process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Other artists have told me that my music doesn’t sound like anybody else’s. I would imagine that’s because I don’t only listen to hip-hop music; I also listen to jazz, punk rock, reggae, salsa, and a number of other genres. Having so many different influences, I like to be creative and think outside the box whenever I’m writing a new song. That goes for both music production as well as my writing/lyrical process.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My buddy and producer, Tonyvee Beats, has helped me develop my sound a lot over the last few years so I definitely need to thank him. Also, about five years ago, I met my good friend, P-Butta, in Orlando just from seeing each other around at local shows. Both being independent artists walking parallel paths, we’ve built a strong friendship and are always bouncing ideas off of each other on how to improve/grow our crafts. P-Butta has also introduced me to a few other creatives that I’ve become good friends with like my DJ, DJ Dynasty, and my videographer, UP Filmz.
