Today we’d like to introduce you to JayQuan Nance.
Hi JayQuan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been doing makeup since high school. It was a requirement to be a trojanette and I just fell in love and started practicing, trying anything I saw. I taught myself color theory, difference in faces and what’s crazy is I had a concept and grasp of it before I dived deeper. I started off very nontraditional. Bright colors and avant-garde looks. Working at Sephora for three years helped me mold my knowledge of products, how to cater to each client’s individual needs and gave me a broad spectrum of products to play with. In 2015 I went to cosmetology thinking it would help my journey as a MUA and it did not, what they don’t tell you is it’s about hair for the most part. I have been a working MUA for nine years and continue to expand my skills and clients. I’d really like to get into teaching people makeup. Because there are no rule however there are theories. I’ve been creating content on YouTube and IG since about 2013 as JayyPinkk’s Vanity to brand myself. Makeup and teaching makeup will and as always been my first love. So that is one half of my business, the other half is Shea butter products. 2015 was also the year I became more interested in my skin and body care, as well as hair care. I wanted to use natural products however soon learned that a little man made is not always bad.
However, when it came to my skin, I different noticed I was not staying hydrated. My mom introduced me to Shea butter and when I was younger, I hated it. It was hard it didn’t smell sweet, which to a 12 year then was important. So a couple of years later, I found a way to make it softer at minimum, mixing oils with the butter. My mother being a chef offered the idea of whipping air into it almost like you do egg whites and it just stuck. Over the years, I changed the oils, learned about pH levels, non-comedogenic (non pore-clogging) oils and butter, what heals and protects the skin’s natural moisture barrier, and basically improved the product. I’ve always shared the mixture with family and friends; and told to sell it, they’d buy it but I didn’t have the confidence to start a business. 2019 I was depressed beyond words but was not even aware and the only thing that really gave me joy was makeup and listening to music while I moisturized my skin. Things truly hit rock bottom and I found myself in a safe place able to address things that I allowed to happen to me and all that I had just pushed down to keep going. God pressed it upon my heart and my pastor’s heart for me to start this whipped body butter business. I felt like it didn’t have time, everyone is doing it now, how am I different, it can wait. But it couldn’t, I got fired, lol so I had time now and I was so scared and excited. I had no clue where to start. I was embarrassed that this on my heart and I had no knowledge of what I was really doing. I felt like I had no support and I’m learning all on my own. God started to put me in positions where I had to ask for help and depend on those around me. Which is not my comfort zone but what I had been doing was not working.
January 2020, I launched JayyPinkk’s Vanity LLC whipped body butter. I was terrified however I had some support. I’m still learning about market and how social media really works. They have all these tips and seminars on how to work it but that’s a whole different can of worms. But what I can say is I’m blessed. I have a business that is growing everyday, I make a natural product sourced from natural and organic ingredients, designed to cater to skin’s natural needs to maintain moisture. I get to share my testimony of how God saved my life and used my business to teach me discipline and to trust the process and believe that it all lead to something bigger than me. I’m gonna be 28 years old soon and honestly did not feel like I’m done anything great to be turning 28. But for God to take me out of the dépressive state I was in, show me how he has prepared me to share my testimony, and give my two successful business to teach me the discipline I’ve always wanted and to still be alive, it’s truly the greatest gift. Sometimes it’s so hard to see the growth and lessons because we just want to get there but it’s so necessary to take a step back and just take it all in. Remind yourself that you are God’s greatest creations and He made us to create. I’m so thankful for people like Alexandera who see what I struggled to see in myself for so long. But once you see it, you can’t unsee it and it’s only one way to go.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not a smooth road. I did not finish college. I never knew what I truly wanted to do but school was not it. Fear was my biggest obstacle and growing up, I learned how to exist without being noticed which gets you nowhere when you have dreams like mine. Money was another one I didn’t get good at keeping and handling it until this was all I had, but I was never taught. I had to teach myself but I don’t come from a family who does handle money well. And probably lack of discipline and consistency, I’m a Sagittarius so when the results aren’t evident right then, it’s on to the next lol and having a business as taught me that’s not how this works.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Makeup Artist with nine years of experience, as well as a business owner. With makeup, I specialize in base makeup, so natural medium to full coverage makeup, specialty eye shadow looks, and special effects makeup; all self-taught. I’m most known for natural soft glam now but when I first started, it was blue lipstick, honestly any color but the blue was my thing. I’m most proud of my growth in makeup. I’ve learned so much in the past nine years and always try my best to apply them as well as adapted to my surroundings and treads. I think what sets me apart is my genuine authenticity. I can absolutely learn and keep up with trends but my integrity and work ethic will never fold, I’m also always aware of where I can do and be better.
What are your plans for the future?
The future for JayyPinkk’s Vanity is bright, I named it that to almost feel like your at your friend’s house chilling, watching and learning. So for the makeup aspect, I plan to start teaching applications that is not restricted to “you need to learn this or do that” but more so “what are you interested in?” Encouraging those who want to learn that mistakes are ok, makeup can be wiped off and practice is the only want to get better but also go at your own pace. If cosmetics are in God’s plan, I’m with it, right now as a MUA there really aren’t any gaps to fill for products. For the skin and body care of JPV, I’d like to expand into more awareness of skin and body care. I want to teach how to care for this vessel that we have on borrowed time; and create Shea butter body products that actually work to heal and restore the skin.
