Life & Work with SLD

Today we’d like to introduce you to SLD.

Hi SLD, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been writing music since the age of nine safe to say I have a strong passion for it. Originally I’m from a small town Bridgeport CT born and raised. Many never even heard of the city which is one of the many reasons I had to relocate. I knew deep down as much as I love my city, I won’t be able to make it in my city. There were not many network options available. So I made a difficult choice to move across the country on my own, no friends, no family. I decided to move to Florida and I have been here for the past three years enjoying every moment of it. But I didn’t move down here to enjoy the beaches and nice weather I was on a dedicated mission. The first two years with me being here I wasn’t involved in the music scene as I planned to be so I made a drastic change. I sat down, started doing research on showcases in Orlando for local artists, reached out to fellow musicians to network, I even read a few books on the music business to ensure my mind was sharpen and equip for my next step. Once I learned what I needed to know, I released my debut single “Trust Issues”.

Only with 600 followers on Instagram no actual engaging fans releasing my single was not the smartest move yet, but what’s done is done. So I started thinking how to get more involved in the music scene and that’s when I did show after show. On 8/24/2021 was my first show performing my debut single and ever since then, I have not stopped performing. The last two months, I have successfully performed 12 times different dates and venues. During that time, my single has jumped on Spotify over 5K streams and increased my followers on Instagram over 300+ and I was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip Hop Artist. To see so much happen for me in such short time gives me the fuel I need to keep going. I do have a few more goals to check off before I release my debut album “The Beginning” but I do plan on releasing it the start of 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish it was a smooth road, LOL. As many artists, I have had many struggles. My main struggle, I guess I can say was my big heart. Knowing I’m destined to make it I try to bring and better many individuals with me, which always results to me hindering myself on the way. I had to learn you can’t bring everyone with you, my favorite quote I remind myself you can’t try to move on to chapter 2 still trying to bring chapter 1 characters with you. And now I focus on myself and my journey where I need to be; truthfully doors are opening and I’ve never felt better!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The simple answer is I am a “rapper” but I no longer like to identify myself as one so the correct answer will be an artist. Reason why anyone can “rap” rhyme a bunch of words but I do much more. I tell stories, illustrate my emotions through music, sharing my pain and/or joy. What separates me from other artists I understand the importance and power that music truly has. Music was designed to empower, lift people spirits, allow us to relate to one another sharing story of trials and tribulations. And I intend to keep that part of music especially in Hip Hop alive!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Advice I can give anyone that I wish someone told me is always to keep God first and to pace yourself! It’s human nature for us to look at others and where they are and critique yourself more. But I am learning this is my journey, my path meaning the steps I have to take will never align with others on the same journey or who have the same destination. So enjoy your road to success every bump, pit stop and or delay. As long as you remain consistent and pace yourself, you’ll make it to your destination same way.
