Rising Stars: Meet Alexis Blount

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Blount.

Hi Alexis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a teenager, I had a heart for everything beauty. When I played with my dolls, I had an idea to do their like my mom did her friend’s hair. So to be completely honest, my mom inspired me to move in that direction how she could transformed her friend’s hair from church from next door sally into Diana Ross. She would turn all her friends into Beauty queens rocking the classic French Rolls. And that really peaked my interest so I did my dolls hair in up do’s and felt I was turning my first clients (my dolls) into beauty queens which I enjoyed. This felt so right and purposeful. Those small moments in my room fueled my drive to want to do more and learn more about beauty. It set my future trajectory toward Beauty. My mom encouraged to continue which kept me quite entertained and busy. This inevitably leads to me into the field of professional beauty at an early age. I was 14 years old when I landed my first gig as a hands on assistant protege with Patrice Wilson who was at the time a very popular stylist. For the next seven years, I would be learning the ins and outs of the business. I eventually grew into my own landing some great clientele. This leads me to the idea of getting my own salon. With all the knowledge I had gained at the time, I knew I could do it run my own business. I had the opportunity to attend Travis Career Center. Which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to get into beauty. I was still in high school learning so much but I was able to complete my courses and receive my cosmetology license while still in High School and also my High School Diploma in 2006. Yes, I was working my butt off. I wanted to be great. I want to take my talents to the world. So I took a leap of faith and got my first salon at age 21. I was so excited. With all the success and momentum, I was on top of the world. Then out of nowhere, my life was changed. I took a big hit. I lost my mom suddenly and unexpected. She had a heart attack. I felt abandoned and this really burden me. I missed my mom and I was doing so well but she wasn’t here to witness all the hard work paying off. I lost the one person that inspired me to get into this career. I thank God for my father and a few mentors who encourage me to stay on track during that time. Because of my passion for the industry and educating others, it led me to the opportunity to work part-time at a local private cosmetology academy as an instructor, although that was a future goal I accomplished it at the age of 24. Because performing hair services is not just a career but a calling, I have been able to take my talents from behind the chair, affording several opportunities to expand my artistry into the realm of educational classes, photoshoots, working as an onsite stylist, as well as serving as a platform artist at various showcase around United States.

In 2015, I joined MPact Beauty Educational Team of educators as a colorist where I was able to embrace and share my knowledge with professional stylists. I quickly begin to travel with MPact Beauty where I was able to exercise my beliefs on making a difference in the industry. I’m dedicated to the cosmetology field and I cherish opportunities to share my talents and knowledge. I come uplift, encourage with both professionals and people every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely haven’t been a smooth road. But challenges leaves room for the opportunities for growth. During my time in school, losing my mother was devastating. But it fueled my drive and my ambition for my passion. Also during the times I traveled the country educating, I had to juggle being a caregiver to my father who became ill as well as being a salon owner. I was truly being stretched but I kept God first and through my challenges and obstacles, it made me the person I am today. I am stronger, wiser, and confident that I will persevere in any struggles that come my way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Because I was ‘raised’ in the industry I assume everyone knew the things I did, it took mentors and clients to help me see my gifts God gave me. I specialize in hair care, color, and textured hair. These three specialties have paved my success but most of all, my heart to serve people has set me apart from the rest. Caring for people is become obsolete, and I’ve always made that my priority that my guest or those around me will leave physical, mentally, and spiritually better than they were. People just need someone who cares or that will listen. My guest always leaves with a refresh and/or renewed mindset.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
God and my will to serve people has been the most important to my success. This is how I have run my business and have molded my character.
