Today we’d like to introduce you to Sapphire Servellon.
Hi Sapphire, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a self-taught artist and curator. I began pursuing my talents at an early age after falling in love with watercolor, which eventually became the primary medium. As a product of my growth, I began to develop conceptual series of works to immortalize and reconcile the lessons brought to my psyche. With each concept, my practice expanded while building off one another. This led to a steady flow of interdisciplinary projects. While creating these series of works, I simultaneously turned curator. By founding a DIY gallery space in 2016 with fellow creative Elizabeth Fleming and through the work with our emerging artist collective “Psych Cat”, I’m able to focus on getting my works and the works of our peers into more traditional gallery settings. The collective, run by myself and other local creatives, focuses on artistic endeavors ranging from publishing to installations. With each exhibition or event, the team creates a new, unique experience for the community. Currently residing in Orlando, FL, I’m balancing my personal practice, curatorial endeavors, and community-based projects.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In the pursuit of happiness and freedom, no road is an easy venture. Most struggles can just stem from the insecurities of having an audience. The work can be very personal or intimate. While the bigger hardship is having community support with local galleries or showcases. Granted those are the reasons why I started to take matters in my own hands. Working with owners and curators that cared more about the work and the artists!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My collection is psychedelic and post-conscious expressions. While my bread and butter will always be watercolor, I began branching out to incorporate markers, acrylics, sculpture, and animation into my practice. Most of the work starts from a therapeutic place of needing to expel or immortalize images/events while other times it’s an in depth analysis of my spiritual world, a way to find beauty and wonder to my surroundings.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family has always been very supportive. My father is an advocator of the arts so he exposed us while growing up. My sisters are artists as well, so that has been a kinship. My partner, Casey and creative partner Elizabeth Fleming. Nano of public art prints and Marilyn of the Osceola arts center. I really can’t express more how much I value them in my life. Without them, I would be a closet artist living in secret.
