Today we’d like to introduce you to Guenther Oka.
Hi Guenther, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began wakeboarding at the young age of four years old. My parents are from Ohio and were big water-skiers. My dad actually water skied at the Orlando Sea World in the ski shows back in the day. Growing up in Ohio, we would go to the lake house in the summer and spend as much time as possible in the water. I was always wakeboarding and waterskiing and just enjoying time on the water. When I started competing around age 9, I didn’t think I could do it for a living. But as I got older and my skills progressed, I thought I might have a shot at doing this full time. When I was 16, I moved onto Lake Jessamine in Orlando and began my wakeboarding career. From there, I’ve accumulated 5 World Titles, 5 National Titles, and an X-Games Gold Medal, Orlando is the place to be for Wakeboarding!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any of these journeys are smooth. Fortunately, I haven’t sustained a big injury in my career so far. But there were a lot of losses and setbacks along the way. There is always something to be learned from those experiences and that is ultimately what makes you better.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My job title is a professional wakeboarder. We compete nationally and globally in high-level competitions. We also do photo and video shoots that help showcase our wakeboarding and the products that we use. Another part of the job is getting people involved in wakeboarding for their first time. This involves organizing “free ride” days and helping grow the community of wakeboarding. I really try to have as much fun as possible when I’m on the water and not take it too seriously. I do think that my competition results set me apart from others, but I really just try to let my riding do the talking.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There is always someone on board that helps make all the gears turn. I’ve had a lot of mentors over the years, but my parents have played the biggest role in my career. Just always encouraging me to do my best and have fun. But also helping me make big decisions and find the right path. My girlfriend, Meagan Ethell, also happens to be a 6x wakeboard world champion. She’s taught me so much about competition and is also one of the most dedicated athletes I’ve ever seen. A huge thank you to my sponsors as I couldn’t do any of this without them. Liquid Force Wakeboards, O’Neill Wetsuits, Red Bull, Axis Wake Research.
