Rising Stars: Meet Kelly Barna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Barna, Ed.S.

Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up with a father who owns a small business in Orlando, I knew I eventually wanted to work for myself. Before starting Barna Psychology, I worked for two different public school districts in Tampa and Orlando.

The colleagues, children, and schools I worked with gave me the foundation and experience I needed to transition to private practice. The final push was from my husband and first-born son.

I decided that I wanted more flexibility in my schedule, and took the plunge to start Barna Psychology in 2018 soon after quitting my full-time school district job and having my son.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! I felt slightly crazy and uncertain about starting a business with a newborn. It has been so rewarding to watch the business grow and support the students and parents in the Orlando community.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you take the chance! I don’t know if I would have taken the leap without the support from my wonderful husband, kids, and parents/extended family.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed school psychologist who offers educational testing services for students enrolled in prekindergarten through high school. My specialties include testing for giftedness and learning and attention difficulties.

My evaluations are mostly used to help support students in the school with interventions, accommodations, and special education services. I pride myself on being able to help support each student’s learning and emotional growth.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lessons I’ve learned along the way are that kindness goes a long way and to “keep it short and simple.” My students and families want to be heard and validated.

They want straightforward and proven recommendations to assist with academic and emotional needs. My goal is to determine each student’s strengths, challenges, and learning style to provide the best support for positive growth and success at home and school.
