Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathi Duran.
Mathi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As an adolescent, I always knew that I wanted to become my own boss. My future was not always clear. When I first started college, I started exploring my talents. I began experimenting with fashion by altering clothes. Fashion has always been part of who I am. I have been gifted with a vision in fashion. In 2019 I decided to step into my calling and take my passion serious. I started my brand Surreal. Surreal is a unisex brand that represents authenticity. I want to provide my customers with quality apparel and comfort. Surreal is a brand that represents diversity and inclusion. Representation, innovation and authenticity matters.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’d be lying if I said this journey had been a smooth road. With any business, you will run into many obstacles. Throughout my experience, I have faced many challenges in regards to finding the right vendors, partnerships, marketing and etc. The obstacles will come. In every failure, there is a lesson learned. It’s important to apply that wisdom moving forward.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a driven individual. I have been gifted with artistic abilities. My creative direction is what I pride myself most in. I have the ability to think of concepts in my head and execute them at a gifted level. I stay true to who I am and what I believe in. I illustrate that through my talents.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Adaptive intelligence is extremely important. I am open to changes. Covid-19 affected my business in a substantial way. At the time I had been working with vendors overseas so when the crisis started my products were being affected due to the restrictions that were in place. Covid-19 taught me how to maneuver through obstacles as well as creating a brand new vision for the brand itself. There is always a hidden gem In every obstacle but one must be open to changing their perspective.
