Check Out Tyrell Garrett’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrell Garrett.

Hi Tyrell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Tyrell Garrett and I’m a 29-year-old artist born and raised in South-Central, Los Angeles. My artist name is Paco, which stands for Positive Affirmations Create Opportunities and I create for the African Americans who were, and still are, told no.

African American children and adults are reminded daily that they are “less than” and or “unworthy”, so I aim to encourage them through my art to show them that any and everything is possible when you don’t feed into the fabrications that our lives are useless. I hope my art will be able to spark a question, idea, or even a self-reflecting experience while being viewed, I use captivating color palettes accompanied with abstract linework giving the viewer a moment to breathe.

Once people begin to question the things they don’t agree with, healing takes place shortly after. This is what I want to achieve with art, for the people around the world that look like me and face the same hardships, to heal and become whole!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish it was smooth, haha but it’s very difficult to get exposure when it’s just you alone. It’s a bit challenging to market yourself and creates your art simultaneously. I’m still trying to figure it all out to be honest. But it’s mostly enjoyable.

I think if I didn’t love doing this I would’ve given up a long time ago because they are days and nights where it seems worthless. But when I sit a reflect on the joy creating brings me, I know I could never quit!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I go through phases of what I specialize in, I like to experiment with different styles often. So currently I’m specializing in sharp lines and harmonious color palettes.

So that would be what I’m known for right now, murals that incorporate rigid and organic line work accompanied by light patterns and color palettes that blend very well with one another. I would have to say my very first piece is what I’m most proud of, for me, it symbolizes the will to commit and succeed in a world many don’t get the chance to stay in for long.

I’m always a student of my craft first, and my willing to continue to learn without an ego. I don’t care if the person I’m learning from is 15 years younger than I am, if there’s something they know that I don’t I’m not afraid to ask for assistance. That’s what sets me apart from other artists.

What does success mean to you?
Success is simply never giving up. Set out to do something and continue to do it until you literally can’t anymore, that’s success to me.
