Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimesha Bass.
Hi Kimesha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I originally started cosmetology in high school for an extra elective. I wasn’t quite interested in doing hair, but my mother made me attend a vocational school in order to finish my hours after I graduated from high school. I was 17. While I was in vocational school, I became an assistant at a hair salon named D’essence. It was one of the hottest salons at the time. When I realized how easy the money was and how it made each client feel after each visit, hair became a passion for me. I assisted and did my own clients on the side for about three years. Until I was forced by my mentor to finally get my own booth. At the time when I started in the hair industry, weaves weren’t as popular as they are now.
Healthy hair care was a big thing. So lucky for me, I was able to gain so much knowledge when it came to CARING for hair. However, slowly but surely, the new weaves trends started to be a hit, so I veered away from caring for hair and focused more on weaves. I was very known for my cuts. Especially the bob cuts. After a few years of that. I began to focus on hair care again. I have always cared. For healthy hair, but in these recent times, I have realized that my passion is in nurturing and caring for the hair. Being that your hair is your crown, I feel that it is extremely important to give your hair love and nourishment! Hence me branding myself as the “SILK PRESS GODDESS” In 2019, I also started my hair extension line with my lovely business partner Kendra. Whatever I have my name on, it must be quality and have great representation, so this was another journey that took time and patience. Hair is just a stepping stone for the many great things I have in store for my clients and my fellow women. Im currently writing a self-help and motivational book to inspire women like me that if a desire is put in your heart, then it’s already yours. Believe in yourself!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth AT ALL. There were many bumps and detours which is a part of life but I also believe that if you don’t believe that you’re deserving of the best life and you don’t believe in yourself, that is what creates struggles. All of the struggles that I endured were rooted in me doubting my worth—struggles of being broke, allowing others to validate me, laziness and inconsistency.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist. Who specializes in healthy hair care and Silk press services. I’m proud of my passion for caring for other’s hair and always have satisfied clients. What sets me apart from others is that I actually care about not only your hair but how you feel on the inside as well. I use my platform to encourage others to believe in themselves and be great!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When finding a mentor, I would follow your heart. Make sure that your mentor has the same beliefs and values as you do. Popularity doesn’t define skill and expertise. And remember that you can learn from anyone.
