Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlyn Phillips.
Hi Carlyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I guess you can say that I am an Artist split three different ways! Always had a talent for visual art, which became my passion. Then later in life became my work in the beauty business as a Makeup Artist. However, that wasn’t enough. I became interested in the performing arts while in high school, but later manifested itself in my adult life. I took acting classes and started auditioning and booking local commercial gigs, independent films, and even some television. Today, I have expanded my business into the permanent makeup industry. Permanent Makeup Artist makes artist number three and I still continue to do all three passions for a living!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! From childhood, I was groomed to get an education first and pursue the “Arts” as a hobby only. My early career path landed me in the medical profession as a transcriptionist and then an educator. Getting laid off from a job that I loved was my wake up call to pursue my passion. I dove in headfirst to building my makeup artist career, which involved portfolio building and networking. Starting out, I wasn’t paid for gigs until I had to prove my talent. Same for acting. The paid work didn’t come for the first two years. Each year, even after I was getting paid gigs and clients, I had to constantly market myself and network to get my name known and then everything turned into digital and the industries became more competitive. I refused to be defeated or get left behind, so I educated myself on the business of marketing and applied it to my crafts. Soon, I was able to see the fruits of my labor and my businesses began to grow.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a beauty industry professional who specializes in makeup application and permanent makeup cosmetics. Over the years, I have been known for being skilled, detail-oriented, and a true artist who knows how to make a client feel confident about their transformational outcome. I am most proud of developing a career starting out at zero to having television, print publishing, and celebrity clientele. What sets me apart from others is my ability to know and understand what a client wants and expects before they even know it or speak on it!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The warm weather mostly year-round. The diversity in people and culture. What I dislike is the disproportion of wealth gap and opportunity.
