Check Out Marianne Baez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marianne Baez.

Hi Marianne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2008, I was expecting my second child Marco. I’m from Puerto Rico and the product I use to work (embroidery baby burps clothes) is very common in my home island. Those days were impossible for me to buy baby burps due to economic reasons so I started dreaming with the idea to start making them for myself but how? I think to myself if I never had the experience with embroidery or sewing. But something burned my heart for months. My mother-in-law gifted me my first sewing machine. I remember that I went to a store to ask some questions about embroidery machines and the salesperson told me “Come back if you have the money so I will not waste my time” I cried thinking about how impossible this was, I almost gave up but my husband told me “you will not give up, you will have your machine” Months later I bought my first cheapest embroidery machine. Since then my products started traveling different countries in the world and the further country was Afghanistan. Last year I chose a new name for my small business and I decided for OkiDoki because it’s easier to spell in Spanish and English. I designed the logo and added some other articles like baby clothes looking for additional options to the clients. I still dream, I still create and I know that this is just the beginning of a dream that was born 13 years ago.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The challenge I faced was at the very beginning when I stopped by an embroidery machinery store and after being ignored by the salesperson when I asked for financial options she replied “if you have to money to buy it I can give you the information if not come later when you are sure to buy it”.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make embroidery baby burp clothes. My clients love to select the design and personalize the products. I combine the design with fabric at the bottom. I feel very proud about all the countries that my products arrive in like Afghanistan, Mexico, California, Peru, Puerto Rico, Texas, Boston, Nebraska and others. What sets me apart from others is probably the one on one customer service I provide to my clients. Is very personalized. Many of my clients are my friends now and we never see each other in person. They let me see the growth of their kids since their baby stages in life.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love all the books with inspirational topics. I love to read stories about people who struggle in life and at the end, they are able to see their dreams come true like Walt Disney.
