Daily Inspiration: Meet Tomas Guerrero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomas Guerrero.

Hi Tomas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My professional dance career started in New York City back in 1996. I was pulled from the social dance scene in NY as an invitee to join a team being formed at the time by the name of Santo Rico. In 1997 I was entrusted with directing Santo Rico due to unfortunate circumstances with the original owner of Santo Rico at the time. Four dance schools, 50 countries, our own HBO documentary, and 26 years later here I am in Orlando Florida running my own dance school here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were countless struggles from our first dance school partially being burnt down; being entrusted with a business I knew nothing about; losing all of our students; the original owner not being able to continue with the school; the many doubters not believing in my ability to succeed when I took over; and running a business in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city at the time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I’m a world renown dance instructor, choreographer, and business owner. I’ve taught the art of New York style Salsa to children & adults of different ages and ethnicities.
I’m known for my years of work within the different communities I’ve lived & worked in, while helping the art grow to a global level, and training many professional dancers who were also able to erect their own teams/schools. Besides traveling the world I’m also known for creating the world famous “Santo Rico Spin technique” for ladies. And for one of my biggest achievements, being featured in my own HBO documentary, “El Espíritu de la Salsa” and have performing alongside many Salsa superstars, like Marc Anthony, Tito Puente, Oscar DeLeon, Sonora Ponceña, Jose Alberto El Canario, Raulin Rosendo, Gilberto Santa Rosa, among many others.
I think what sets me apart from others is how I’ve been able to overachieve in my craft as a non-trained street dancer who never took classes, and primarily learned mostly thru choreography.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The fact that I’ve never called what I do “work” because I live my best life daily doing what I love. Also putting smiles on people’s faces from learning how to dance on a level they never thought possible.
