Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa and Mandy.
Hi Melissa and Mandy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We met about 8 years ago when our youngest kids were small at a Mom’s group. We soon discovered we both enjoyed true crime and began discussing that. I (Melissa) was a huge fan of true crime podcasts, and asked Mandy if she’d like to join me in starting a podcast. Mandy said yes and the rest is history.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I would say it’s been fairly smooth considering neither of us has a background in radio or podcasting or owning a business or just about anything we are currently doing. We’ve always remained committed to creating a show we enjoyed and we’ve stayed true to that. We each have two kids, so keeping things balanced between our professional work and personal life is always work, but we’ve got great support systems in our husbands and families so that has been paramount.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are podcasters who host a true-crime podcast. What sets our show apart is that we have made a show we would enjoy listening to. We know people are listening to us while working or rocking a baby to sleep, so we want to tell stories in a way people can follow them and enjoy listening to them as well as being respectful to the victims in the story. I think we are both most proud of the community that we have helped create. There’s a Facebook group that we no longer run, but has over 10,000 listeners that are supportive of one another and share about their lives and families and rarely about crime, but we love it. We’ve made so many friendships through the show.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
We have had several opportunities come up through the podcast. most recently being on Yasmin Vossoughian’s show on MSNBC. Two years ago, neither of us would have said yes to being on live TV, but this year we did and it was an incredible experience we are both happy to have. When it comes to risks in general with our show, I’d say we are less risky. We are open to hearing about different options and opportunities, but we typically make the safest decision for us. In a partnership, it’s important for both sides to feel comfortable with the decisions being made, and I think we do a good job of checking in with each other on these things.
