Conversations with Aycan Ucar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aycan Ucar.

Aycan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been very keen on creating things from scratch since my childhood years in which I used to watch and read do-it-yourself projects. Spending my spare time by creating were giving me a great pleasure. One day, when I was around 13-14 years old, I wanted to try cross stitch. However, I had definitely no idea how to do it. I thought our neighbor might have an idea about this and I asked her for help. All my actual story has started with learning cross stitch from her that day. Cross stitch was a hobby that seemed like therapy to me at the very first of my trials. Over time, I thought that it might be enjoyable and kind of therapy for others as well. I started to give small workshops to those around me who were curious about what I was doing. During these times, I met Etsy! This is followed by meeting embroidery kits on Etsy. I really liked the idea that people can learn embroidery in writing, and I immediately prepared my designs in kits that people can make from scratch. When I put it up for sale on Etsy, I started getting very good feedback which motivated me amazingly. And I have realized that Etsy has become my full-time job. Currently, while selling the kits of my embroidery designs, we are also insterested in punch needle art, which has become our new passion, with my team consisting of 5 lovely members. We design mug rugs, pillowcases and car coasters with our tiny punch needles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t easy at all! The problem was that I studied German Translation Studies at university and my family wanted me to do a job related to my degree, which was not my intention at all. However, after graduation, I determined to follow my dreams and this is exactly what I have been doing since then! I do believe that sometimes the best thing that one can do for herself is listening to her heart and doing what it says!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I can describe myself as a fiber artist. I am mostly specialized in doing my works with yarn. You cannot imagine how people love to see and get the things that are handmade! This is indeed what I love about what I do. People really love and respect your art which is something priceless for me and my team. The uniqueness of our work is one of the most important factors that has helped us to be better in time and reach out more people. What I am most proud of about my work is feeling the satisfaction and happiness of people from the other side of the world! It is an inexpressible situation to see our products in someone else’s car!

Last but not least, we are collaborating with physical small businesses around the world which are mainly based in USA and Canada. In this way, our lovely products are now in the cars and houses of thousands of people whom we do not even know!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The fact that I am from Turkey!
