Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert McClory.
Hi Robert, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My introduction to photography came when I took a Photography 101 course as a college elective. One of the first things we learned how to do in that class was develop our own prints. Like so many other photographers around my age, seeing that first print develop hooked me for life. From there I immediately changed my major to photography, switched schools to attend one of the premier photography schools in the world (South Eastern Center for the Study of Photography Arts at Daytona State College). During my time in college, I began photographing my passion at the time, skateboarding. That quickly turned into the beginning of my professional photography career.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think it has been as smooth as it can be but then again, pretty early on I learned what I could and could not handle in terms of uncertainty so I always made sure I had enough irons in the fire. For my entire photography career, I have always done other things from computer work to writing. I think that gave me the freedom to just “be” more as an artist without having to suffer the pressure that I think sometimes brings us down.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am mostly known as a wedding and portrait photographer but since I have photographed many things in my career I think I bring a certain versatility to the table. I’m most proud of my longevity and evolution. It’s easy to burn out in this industry but I’ve used the fire to propel me rather than bring me down.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am an avid audiobook listener. I have been an Audible member for a very, very long time. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts is one of my all-time favorite books. It’s about as epic as it gets and I love epic.
