Check Out Dashiki Linzy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dashiki Linzy.

Hi Dashiki, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up watching my father work within his music group OCMC as well as my aunt working within the graphic design of the group. One of my earliest memories of music is recording in my grandmother’s living room at about 5 years old, freestyling nursery rhymes. I didn’t get back into music until about 6th grade when myself and 2 of my cousins formed a group RNS. It was short-lived but it gave me a spark again when it came to music. I stopped again and focused on school and sports, but after my grandmother passed on Christmas morning of 2013, I remember not being able to sleep at night and so I began writing and put a few poems into songs. I didn’t officially begin backing music until my 4th year of college, and that moment in my life proved to me music is where I belonged. My goal has always been to funnel my expression and create something I felt was missing in music and the culture itself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Hasn’t been the smoothest road. When I officially started music, I joined a group AVRG. Unfortunately, people pray on a lot of these new artist with scams and offers especially through social media, therefore a false deal was the reason why things ended shortly after. And like many Covid has affected not just the world and our day-to-day but mental health as well, and so I found myself depressed when the pandemic first began. Especially because it was my senior year in college with just 2 months left, I was juggling school and music and recording within my space. But abruptly in March, I had to move back home and it took about 9 months before I was able to find my footing again in life and music. One of the biggest hurdles was losing my uncle in April of 2020. It took a big toll on my family as a whole and I wasn’t able to focus on anything anymore. I can truly say music during that time helped me stay above water and distract myself for that experience.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In all, I would call myself a creative. I love expressing through dance, painting, music, and acting. I’m most known for my drawing/painting abilities as I began creating artwork in high school. I’m also known for how well I write as far as stories, poems, and lyrics. Of all the 3 the thing I’m most proud of is my music. It’s something I can also go back to and create something fresh. Being able to transform according to each song, I always surprise myself once the initial cut is ready. The thing that separates myself from other would be my method. I harmonize with myself in every component of my vocals and it gives my the ability to really mold and shape the way in which a song can sound. And being that I’m able to adjust my Melody and flow based on a track, the possibilities of how a song can sound seems endless.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the music industry continuing to evolve within the next 5-10 years. For years there’s been a limited platform for things such as streaming, awards shows, venues and we’re at a point within the culture where it’s time to make something for ourselves. And so, I see there being even more types of award shows, a wider array of genres. I can see our industry becoming more independent-focused as there has been a big light shinning on the pros and cons of being an independent artist and more artist are seeing the value of owning their creations. Artist will be able to work within the lines of entrepreneurship and really have more control on the path of their music career and content, which allows for more expression and individuality.
