Rising Stars: Meet Reba

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reba.

Hi Reba, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always loved browsing magazines, but the things I saw there, were always a dream. In Middle School, I took a home economics sewing class and it opened up a whole new world for me to explore. What I learned was basic, but it was a great start. Now the dream had turned into a possibility. I sewed a lot of pieces and challenged myself to make more complicated patterns. I knew I had more to learn in order to do better. So, after High School, I got a Fashion Design/Marketing degree in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. After graduating from college, I got some experience in the Fashion Industry. It wasn’t long before I got commissioned by a Soho, New York store to make unique clothing for their customers. That was the start of my company. Throughout the years, I have designed for many areas of fashion. I have designed unisex sportswear, Bridal dresses, outerwear, childrenswear, and accessories. One lesson I learned fast is that the Fashion Industry is fast changing. Reinventing yourself and refreshing the pieces you sell keeps you alive within the industry. At one point in my life, I had to make a move from one place to another and my business was falling apart. I was looking for my next financial avenue. Someone asked me to do a My Little Pony costume. I thought that the person needed a full Pony-looking costume, but what she needed was a dress inspired by My Little Pony along with matching fabric cones as legs and arms. Who knew that this would be my next calling? Again, I was willing to research and learn about a new area of clothing called Cosplay. Since then, I make Cosplayer’s dream costumes come true. It is challenging, but so much fun. Now I work with my daughter and we both make unique unisex sportswear, womenswear, jewelry, and accessories. I am glad I chose this career that not only makes me happy but also makes others happy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Any industry that you choose to work in has its ups and downs. As a Fashion Designer, the industry runs so fast around you that by the time you have designed and set up a season of clothing, the industry is on to the next season. There is always the challenge of fabric sourcing, especially now during the Pandemic. I have learned that you can’t let things get to you. If you have passion for what you do, then you should be strong to face the struggles along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I have always been a happy and artistic person. I have always enjoyed many aspects of art and therefore, I share it with others that normally don’t look at art and those that would like to be artists themselves. I hope that I can inspire people to see their surroundings in a new light.
