Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Baysinger.
Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For a long as I can remember, I have found myself drawn to the act of self-expression. I attended an elementary school that specialized in the Arts and eventually found my identity as a dancer. I competed at an elite level as a dancer through high school, until I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. A subsequent spinal surgery prevented me from dancing, but my passion for self-expression took on a new form, in painting. In 2016, I began to accept that painting and creation were deeply therapeutic for me and knew that I had to find a way to make a living as an artist. Having joined the corporate workforce just out of college, I lasted a mere 8 years before I took the leap and made painting as my sole focus.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Initially, my biggest challenge was finding the time to create while also working full time. Oftentimes, it was just a matter of mental bandwidth; coming home exhausted from your day job rarely inspires creativity.
Another challenge is simply navigating the art industry itself. Initially, I found myself asking… “How much do I charge for my work? How do you get into an art gallery? What kind of clientele should I be trying to reach?”
There’s no rule rulebook for your local art community, and I’ve learned that it’s simply a matter of experience, trial, and error.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am artist and painter, specializing in abstract textural art and floral pieces. I am most proud of myself, for having the courage to take the leap and peruse my passions full time.
My use of texture and 3d elements to create pieces that extend beyond the canvas is what I believe sets me apart from others.
My life experience, much like everyone in this world, gives me a perspective that’s entirely unique. I love to celebrate my own individuality for the same reason I admire everyone else’s; we are all supremely unique!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
The ability to do what I love every day, while also maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. To wake up and need nothing, yet have my passions just a short walk away is more than I could ever ask for.
