Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Peltz.
Hi Jenn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
How I started – It was not even my intention to start a business. I was looking through a magazine and came across earring kits. They sell you all the pieces to put together a pair of earrings. It looked like fun so I ordered a couple. I really enjoyed putting them together. I started looking at different beads and things I liked and ordered more. When I had a birthday or celebration, I would look to see if I had a pair of earrings I could add to my gifts. During covid, like most people, I had a lot of time on my hands. I noticed I had a lot of earrings and materials. I thought about setting up a little stand on the walking trail by my house to see if anyone would be interested in purchasing them, as well as a way of connecting with people again. However, I thought the HOA would not be happy about that. My friend suggested I talk to Cynthia Dailey- she was organizing a local market to showcase mom and pop business that were born from the chaos of Covid. I was a bit scared to put myself out there, and very surprised when she accepted my application. My first market was in November 2020. With each market, I learned something new, and in a few months, I was helping others with their first Market. Now I am part of the Windermere Farmers market every Friday and join in the Hamlin markets once a month.
Why the flamingo – From the name of my company to the logo, and even some of my products, you will notice my love of flamingos. Although I have always thought they were beautiful birds, there is a specific reason I chose them. One day I was shopping and noticed a wooden sign with a flamingo on it, it said a number of things (don’t be afraid to get your feet wet, spend time with your flock, stand out in a crowd, be flexible, always be fabulous, FIND YOUR BALANCE). I loved everything it said but “Find your Balance” resonated with me. This is something that I struggle with daily. Being a mom, daughter, wife, sister, friend, worker and so much more. There are so many hats and things to balance in my life. I love the little reminder of how important it is to find just the right balance for your life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, I think things have gone pretty smoothly. I have been fortunate to have a lot of wonderful people help me along the way. So many people were starting at the same time as I was, and we would all give pointers and share things we were learning as we went. Cynthia set up a wonderful group of people and her passion to grow local talent is contagious. Like I said I was so scared to put myself out there, and beyond surprised by all the love and support I received.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create unique jewelry for everyday wear. What do you specialize in? I mostly make earrings, and stamp art (bracelets, rings, necklaces). My earrings are everyday, fun accessories that help show off your mood, your passion, and your interests. I have a little something for everyone from Mickey and Marvel to earthy and simple. My stamp art is very personal. Little reminders of encouragement, loved ones, or even inside jokes.
The personal touch that my things have. I love to make things specifically for someone. Sometimes people will ask me to stamp something that makes no sense on a ring or bracelet but means so much to them. I love to see their face when they put it on for the first time. Or if they are looking for a gift but not sure what exactly they want. We will talk about who it is for and make something just for them. I had a grandmother who was looking for something special for her granddaughter. After talking for a little, she mentioned how they would read books together. I was able to make her granddaughter a bookmark with charms that fit her granddaughter’s personality. And sometimes people will find the perfect thing on their own.
How do you define success?
The first word that comes to mind is happiness. I may not be able to pay my bills with this endeavor, YET , but it is something that I am so proud of. Something that I never knew I was capable of, something I created, and something that touches the hearts of people.
