Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Mawn.
Hi Becca, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have been in and out of therapy since childhood and have been touched by many therapists in my life. I so value the time, empathy, and perspective provided by these individuals. I pursued my undergraduate degree in elementary education due to my mother being a teacher- but decided it wasn’t quite the right fit. Through further self-exploration- I decided to pursue my graduate degree in my true passion- clinical mental health counseling. I am now a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern on track to my licensure status in 2023. I have worked primarily with clients living with HIV/AIDs and the LGBTQIA+ community for the last two years in an agency setting doing mental health, substance abuse, individual, group, and couples counseling. I have now decided to transition to working at a University Counseling Center and pursue my own private practice. I work on and with life transitions, relationship enhancement (especially within non-traditional relationship dynamics like polyamory), substance abuse, sex (with a kink awareness lens), mood disorders, anxiety, women’s issues, self-esteem, body positivity, and more! I work hard to provide a warm, welcoming, nonjudgmental, empathetic environment for my clients. I believe everyone can heal, the path and the tools needed to get there are unique.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The COVID-19 pandemic began during my practicum experience during graduate school. I had to abruptly end relationships with the clients I saw with no processing of the termination. All of my classes for the remaining year of my education were moved online. I have been seeing my clients primarily, almost exclusively, through telehealth since 2020. I have made most of my relationships with people possible through use of my voice as many of my appointments are via telephone instead of, for example, Zoom. Navigating my own trauma brought on by a global pandemic while navigating the toll it takes on others has been an unforgettable experience that has taught me so much about human relationships.
Also, during the pandemic and towards the end of my graduate school experience, I went through a breakup after a 3-year long relationship. It felt at times I would never make it out of the dark hole that breaks up put me in. I ended up coming out on the other side a version of myself I did not recognize- in SUCH a positive way. I wish I could go back and hug past me and tell her how close to achieving my dreams of becoming a counselor who owns her own private practice are!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My private practice, Becca Mawn Counsels, allows me to be the guide in other Florida residents’ transformative journeys. I am a mental health counselor who provides humanistic, culturally sensitive, emotion-focused therapy built around tailoring modalities to client personalities. Some areas I work with include life transitions, identity and body image, relationships and sex, substance abuse/addiction, and mood disturbances. Some identities I hold dear are being LGBTQIA affirming, HIV/AIDS allied, multiculturally competent, kink aware, sex-positive, body-positive, and intersectional feminism. This allows me to be unconditionally positive and empathetic to a diverse clientele as well as adapting approaches to consider clients’ own personal identities. I am a firm believer that everyone can heal and find the best version of themselves. Each person’s experience and journey are unique. The tools each client needs to succeed will look different based on their personal context. If life doesn’t make sense, or you’re stuck in some dark hole, I’d love to talk with you about it. Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Business cards! I know it seems old-fashioned- but I give out my business card and save other professional cards that are given to me. There have been many occasions where I have needed assistance towards something and realized I have a business card for a person who could help me with just what I was looking for. I also recommend in-person events through community groups- like Mental Health Counselors Association of Central Florida- who put on monthly networking events. Most of my mentors are former professors whom I am still in contact with because we are passionate on the same topics.
