Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Cristello.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My best friend in high school had a Canon DSLR, she let me use it when we hung out, and naturally, I fell in love with photography. I started with shooting landscapes, then family portraits at holidays, then I tried out concert photography, which is still my favorite to shoot. A few years back I started working with models doing merchandise photos for bands and quickly had an interest in that kind of work as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In my opinion, art is never a smooth road and obstacles are going to come at you no matter what path you take. There will always be people that won’t understand the story of your photos and on the other end, there will always be people that love everything you create. The biggest struggle I have ever had to endure is the battle with myself. I think it’s called imposter syndrome when you feel like the situations, you’re in are too good to be true and you don’t deserve it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I capture moments for people to relive. I am constantly changing the way I edit photos based on what I felt when I took them. With concerts, it’s so fun, I usually listen to the band while editing the photos and really try to create something that makes you see the music if that makes sense. Merchandise photos for bands, I do the same thing.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The thing you love to do the most can be taken from you in an instant but the people closest to you will always be there supporting you every step of the way.
