Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Calvert.
Hi Maddie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a crafty person, but at the beginning of the pandemic when I was a junior in high school, I was crafting like crazy to fill all the free time we had. I started making these macrame crystal car accessories that ended up leading to my business, All Things Maddiee. Over that summer I was making so many that I was running out of money to purchase more craft supplies and I was running out of space in my car/room to make them. So, in August of 2020, at the beginning of my senior year of high school, I started an Instagram account to sell them for cheap to my friends/family! Very quickly, my account grew and grew when my friends would post pictures of theirs and tag me. At this point, I hadn’t even figured out shipping yet and was just driving to locals people’s mailboxes to drop off orders. I also started to participate in local markets and sell my crafts there, which helped me expand my business tremendously. Since my account grew so much, I opened my Etsy shop in January of 2021. Since then, I have shipped orders to over half of the states and four other countries, as well as being featured in three local stores in Melbourne! I now work on my business full time back and fourth between my hometown Melbourne to Gainesville, where I attend the University of Florida, and everywhere in between!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
While I’ve been extremely lucky with the growth of my business, it has not always been a smooth road. I have had struggles managing my business while being a full-time student, both when I was in high school and now college. Although I’ve had ups and downs with sales when I’m having a hard time dedicating time to my business, once I am able to focus on my business again, I always bounce back.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I am a rising sophomore student at the University of Florida. I am studying advertising in the school of journalism and communications. As far as my professional career goes, it is something I am working on as I’m still a student, but after college, I hope to find a job managing the advertising for a company in a big city. While I’m still in college, I am doing my business full time and learning a lot about advertising that benefits my business. When I have a professional career after I graduate, I hope I can still do All Things Maddiee on a smaller scale on the side. All Things Maddiee is definitely the thing I am most proud of.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is my childhood bedroom that was celestial-themed with the sun, moon, and stars that has inspired me to get into this whole world of astrology and crystals.
