Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Hiebendahl.
Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Ryan Hiebendahl, and I am a Lifestyle and Landscape Photographer based in the Orlando, FL area. My journey into the craft began in late 2019 while I was living in New York, and received a camera as a Christmas gift. I have always had a creative eye, and loved taking photos on my phone of moments that I felt were important for me.
Through my creative journey, I have mainly focused on working with brands to provide content creation of their products through lifestyle photography. Some brands I have had the opportunity to work with include: Johnny Fly Co, Thursday Boots, Take To The Grave, Sail Away Coffee, Nothing New, Mott & Bow, Sail Away Club, Mecum Auto Auction, and many more.
In September of 2021, after leaving New York to move to the Orlando, FL area – I embarked on a short 2-week camper van road trip on the west coast of the United States to visit a handful of National Parks for some hiking. While on the trip I found a new love of Landscape Photography and tried to capture as many unique landscapes as I could on the trip. Since then – I have partnered with a gallery based in Austin, TX called Midnight Station to offer prints of my photographs for collectors to add to their collections.
I look forward to the next year of my photography journey as I have a few trips planned, new prints in the works, as well as working on publishing my first book of photographs.
Gear I use: Leica SL2s, Leica Q2
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not everything in life is smooth, and there will always be some roadblocks in the way. One of the major ones for me being the Covid-19 pandemic. Starting my journey right before the pandemic limited my exposure slightly to working with models in person at the beginning, and didn’t allow me to travel. I think this forced me to focus on the environment around me in the town I was living (Long Beach, NY), and be able to focus on the beauty that has become everyday life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Today I focus on two bodies of work with my photography:
1. Commercial photography, getting to work with brands to capture their products in a unique way through lifestyle photography. I enjoy this because I am able to show how a customer will interact with their products in their everyday lives, and how it fits into their routines.
2. Landscape and travel photography, getting to show unique perspectives of landscapes through how I see the world.
One of the photographs I am most proud of is a piece titled “Almost Heaven” – A photograph of Half Dome from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park. This piece is available for purchase through Midnight Station.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I am fairly new to the Orlando area, and still learning a lot about the different areas. Some things I like best about the area would be the wide range of unique neighborhoods in the area. Having different architecture and cityscapes to photograph never leave me bored. So far, my favorite area to work with is the downtown Winter Park area.
