Meet Rachel Nemati

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Nemati.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As long as I could remember, I’ve always been making art. But I did not have much hope in making it a successful career when art is such a competitive field. But, I quickly realized that every field will have competition. The real question in choosing a career is, do you have the passion and drive to enjoy the challenge?

My life plan was working in computer science, because of the promise of job security. But no matter how well I did, I had no drive to pursue it.

My friends loved computer science for its own sake and spent all their free time finding ways to program light sabers or create programming clubs. I realized that I spent my free time creating any art I could and that the person I am needs beauty in order to thrive.

I took the leap and started my business, and it has been so thrilling watching it grow, realizing I can bring beauty into other people’s lives.

Creating jewelry is perhaps the most exciting art form for me. Designing it and watching it come to life with my own hands, and then bringing it into someone’s life to be worn is wonderful. Each customer has their own unique personality, and I love making things that speak to the soul.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. Owning a small business is challenging, without the security of employment. If I have a slow month, it’s a direct impact on my finances. If I get sick, my customers don’t pay me to get sick leave. If I need to rest, I don’t get paid vacation. But it is so rewarding to be your own boss. When I tell a customer about my jewelry, I’m not just a salesman. I know my jewelry is that good because it is my own product I am selling. Customers will ask, “isn’t it boring sitting and beading?” But when I look at a piece I made with my own hands, often even more lovely than I pictured, I get to say, “I made this.” And getting to see so many beautiful people with different personalities and backgrounds all find something in my jewelry and art that resonates with their soul is just so exciting. It is worth all the risk. It is worth every second of the effort.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make jewelry and art. Especially any jewelry with freshwater pearls, because their shape is always unique, one of a kind. I’ve always loved pearls, and the natural, minimal look with a little bit of pearl and some gold is everything.

I have to say I am most proud of my mermaid choker, it is dainty but makes a statement. Each mermaid choker is purposefully slightly different in pattern, so you know that your piece is one of a kind. And customers love this choker! I can never make enough of them when I sell at the market.

I go the extra mile for quality, always checking and testing my techniques for making wearable art. If you want a cheap piece of jewelry, there is nothing wrong with that. But I’m not here to sell jewelry with the cheapest prices in town. I’m here to make something beautiful and uniquely crafted for you.
