Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Campos.
Hi Erick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in elementary school, I asked to be placed in guitar class for middle school so that I could be a cool guitar-playing kid. Unfortunately, the guitar class was full so I was automatically placed in band instead. Rather than being a rockstar guitarist, I found myself playing clarinet in beginning band. But this ended up being serendipitous as it set off a unique chain of events that led me to where I am today.
I continued playing clarinet and joined marching band in high school I learned electric bass in order to play in a rock band, and I even eventually learned to play guitar as well. At the end of high school, I decided to pursue a formal, classical education in music due to my interest in music theory and enjoyment of the technical structures behind how music works.
Now that I’ve graduated, I enjoy being involved in artistic projects such as films and video games that tell great stories that I can contribute to with my music!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was introduced to the idea of what it really means to be a professional artist in my post-secondary education. Writing music on a deadline or to meet somebody else’s standards was very uncomfortable. It took me a while to come to terms with it and it’s something I’m still constantly thinking of how best to attack even to this day. I will say that the creative and philosophical difficulties of working in art are distinct from the technical and logistical difficulties found in other fields.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am primarily a composer for films and video games. I especially love the artistic freedom and ingenuity found in indie projects. Indie video games have been closer to the forefront of modern game development recently. Creative indie projects have been receiving bigger budgets and a wider audience compared to years past.
I have a particular penchant for projects in the drama genre. I find the power and intimacy of working with stories that involve interesting or complex interpersonal relationships to be personally profound. There’s nothing like a good story with good characters. And I think these stories pair well with my evocative and intense musical style.
How do you define success?
Success is peace and stability through emotional satisfaction.
For my music, I like to contribute to a homogenous and effective whole art piece. I recognize it is important to enhance the content of the story incidentally. The theme or emotions should be a result of all the technical work behind it. This is what I consider to be successful artistically.
