Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Bucaro.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Joanna Bucaro. I am originally from Guatemala. I have been living in the USA for 20 years. I have 3 adult children. I am an educator and my passion has always been making a difference in children’s lives. When I came to the USA, I worked in any kind of job that I could to be able to pay for the bills. Just as it is for any immigrant, it was a tough beginning. Time went by, a lot of ups and downs but with hope and faith, almost 10 years ago, with the help and support of my family, I started All Kids Spanish after realizing that my own children were losing the ability to communicate with my Spanish speaking family because of lack of practice. My goal was to provide a resource that would be effective and would be fun.
It was a very humble beginning. Just myself teaching kids the Spanish language individually and in group settings. I did a lot of volunteer work with the libraries and in educational events as well.
My marketing was “word of mouth” because I really didn’t have a budget to pay for any kind of marketing.
We started meeting at some of my student’s homes and little by little I also started teaching the Spanish class at private schools. Then I started hiring teachers and we were able to rent our own studio. Everything seemed to be going great when all of a sudden, the pandemic started.
I knew I had to be creative and make decisions fast. So, with the help of my wonderful team and my family, we reinvented the All-Kids Spanish concept and started our online program which is still running today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all! Personally, the struggle number 1 was that I didn’t have a budget to invest in my business. At first, I had to wear all the hats in my company. From writing the emails, teaching the classes, preparing lesson plans, administrative tasks, you name it!
I had to learn to be very organized, prioritize and be intentional about my goals. Belonging to a minority was somehow a struggle as well.
What a blessing to have people who I met on the way, who helped in so many ways expecting nothing in return. Those are my “angels”.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about All Kids Spanish?
All Kids Spanish is an online Spanish learning program for children ages 2 to 10 years old. We offer year-round programs for different levels in individual and group settings. We have a great team! All of them have degrees in the educational field, are certified to teach a second language, are native Spanish speakers, and are trained to teach online classes. Our goal is to provide a program that is effective and fun at the same time. We use a robust curriculum with 6 different levels.
Our team is passionate about what we do, we are a family, and every student that signs up to our program becomes part of this family.
I think that a very important part of our success is that we work from our hearts, this is not just a class but the fact of teaching children Spanish is giving them a key to unlock doors of opportunities for their future, for careers, family relationships, travel. In addition, for a lot of our students, it is also a way to reaffirm their identity.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
When God gives you a vision, he will make a way for it to happen. We do our part, which is working hard, never lose hope and be faithful. There will be a lot of obstacles but my advice would be 1 simple word. CONSISTENCY!
Don’t give up. There will be good days and not-so-good days. Just keep going!
When you get knocked down let it be just to get on your knees and pray for strength and wisdom.
