Daily Inspiration: Meet Sabrina Johns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Johns.

Hi Sabrina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sabrina Johns and I am a 22-year-old filmmaker/content creator near Orlando, FL. Growing up, I was always in love with movies and entertainment but I never really understood what really went on behind the camera and how movies came to life. It wasn’t until I was around 18 years old that I miraculously became aware of how much work goes into making a film and how many wonderful career opportunities and paths there are in the film industry. That summer, I sat down and watched the entirety of Amy Sherman Palladino’s “Gilmore Girls” and I was hooked! That show really opened my eyes to the beauty and glamor of entertainment. It was a show that encompassed everything I had ever loved from old Hollywood to comedy, to the fastest dialogue on planet earth. It sent me into a spiral of research and I soaked in everything I could about screenwriting, directing, and production. During this time, I had also been doing YouTube videos on and off about literature and storytelling. When I became enamored with the film industry and everything screenwriting/directing, I decided to melt both my passions into one and began dedicating my YouTube channel to everything I was learning. This was also motivation for me to sharpen my skills as a storyteller, as I simultaneously learned about and taught my viewers about entering the film world. Since then, I have continued creating content across all platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok to bring more awareness to the dedication and the beauty of film as I strive in my career as a filmmaker.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
On the way to any goal, there will always be some kind of obstacle and this has definitely made for a bumpy ride. Of course, I’ve had obstacles! It comes with the dream and it only makes you proud of the journey in the long run. I’ve experienced being in times of complete doubt where I’ve doubted myself and doubted whether or not I was in over my head. I’ve often thought my dreams were too big. I’ve been in many seasons where I found myself stepping down or stepping back from commercial work without income so that I could focus more on my passion (which is easier than it sounds). I’ve become frustrated with myself when things don’t happen as quickly or when I don’t see as much progress as I expect. Life is not perfect, and I expect many more obstacles along the way. But I think the difference is that now, I expect it. There’s a quote by Babe Ruth that says “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” and these words ring in my ear almost every day. There are moments where maybe quitting is the best decision and then there are moments when you have such an overwhelming and inherent love for a specific thing that quitting seems out of the question. I love what I do. I love film and I love creating content. I think that’s what makes the journey even more beautiful. Of course, I’m human and there are moments of crying and feelings of defeat but in the end, it’s the love of everything that I do that gets me back up again. Obstacles are just the dips in the rollercoaster of life and the ride wouldn’t be as fun without them. They are welcomed.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Though my ultimate goal is to become a full-time screenwriter/director I am currently, a full-time filmmaker and content creator bringing awareness to the beauty and knowledge of film. I constantly am creating, photos, videos, and short films, content via YouTube and Instagram, specifically. In addition to this, I also create aesthetic film-like vlogs about lifestyle and screenwriting. I am most proud of the community I have been so fortunate enough to be a part of. It’s hard sometimes to find people who are interested in the same things as yourself and YouTube and Instagram, specifically, have allowed me to connect with some of the most wonderful people. My viewers give me the most joy in this business and they make the strenuous labor worth it. I think a unique thing about my content is that it can often feel like an intimate journey. What I mean by this is, in my journey to learn more about the film industry I would always try to search for successful people in the industry showing their journey to success and I never really found the type of content I was looking for. That’s one of the reasons I made my channel. It’s a way of taking friends along on the ride and becoming successful together. It’s a way of showing each other our progress. I think the content world is missing a lot of “on the journey” type content and is rather replacing that with “I made it” type of content. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that type of content. It’s some of my favorite content to interact with. It gives you something to look forward to in the striving. But sometimes it feels good to have a friend with you in the water, as well.

What do you think about happiness?
This is such a hard question because so many things make me happy. Though it’s not always easy and can be difficult at times, life, in general, is miraculously joyful. I think the thing that makes me the happiest is the feeling of connecting with other people. The feeling of finding intimacy and similarity in other human beings is my favorite thing. I value my family and friends very much and I always get so excited when I get to be in someone else’s life and they get to be in my life for however long that season may endure. Even though we are not all perfect, I think relationships can be both heartbreaking and fulfilling and I think that’s what makes life so beautiful. Connecting on a deep level is definitely what makes me the happiest.
