Today we’d like to introduce you to La Kim.
La, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an up-and-coming Dembow artist born in NYC “Inwood heights” to Dominican parents. As a little girl I knew I wanted to do something in entertainment, but never really seemed to have the know or the how too because my family is a go-to school and become something of yourself mentality especially when I was growing up. One of my fondest memories was when I was in 3rd grade my teacher Ms. Prosper from PS98 in NYC always reminded me of how special she thought I was and I can be whatever I wanted to be. That school year we had a play, I don’t remember what was the play about, all I know is that I was the main character and I memorized everyone’s lines. My mom was the stage helper, always supporting whatever I want to do. In middle school I learned how to play the violin and saxophone, also was part of a lip-signing talent show I believe in 7th or 8th grade. I used to say I was going to be the next lil Kim, learning her verses and rapping them. In H.S. my mom relocated the family to Miami where I went to school with Armando “Pitbull” which my nickname for him was whiteboy as a term of endearment. We would pass out flyers for a school party group/classmates named “Baja panty”. In one of the events, I met Joseph for “El grupo Sancocho” they sang tumba la casa for my 18th bday he took me to la mega where I met Alex Sensation and he did a shout out on the radio. I always enjoyed being around the artists community, but at a very early age, I realized that girls/women were being exploited for sexual favors if I wanted to do anything in this industry, which was something I learned first-hand through someone I met. This person I can’t even really remember how I met them, but they basically said if I introduce to someone that I wanted to meet, what will I give them in return. The gesture was so disgusting that I walked away and said God if it’s meant to be you will let it be. I ended up having kids, getting a Paralegal degree, opening up a business, dabbling in Real estate, and getting Married with King David. Fast forward to now, he pushed me to say a hook on his song “Rompele” that he wanted to create for at least 4 years prior to creating it. All the wanting to become artist came rushing back. Though I am very shy and private in many ways I still enjoy meeting people and hopefully making a difference in their lives. I feel that this is a huge step in my life/career, but I am so excited to see what the future holds. My first song was with La Moyeta and King David called Dinero and my first single was “Besame Kiss Me”. I would love to do collabs with a few artists El Alfa, Bad Bunny, La Insuperable, Natti Natasha, Daddy Yankee, and Nicky Jam just to name a few. There’s too many to name, but that will be in future productions. I believe Dreams don’t stop because of age it stops when you die.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not as smooth as I would like but nothing that’s good ever is. Putting your name and talent out there is hard work plus very costly. I have to manage my time and budget all the time. Getting to the right people to guide in the right directions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I sing Dembow which is a Dominican musical genre. I have 2 singles “Besame Kiss Me ” and “Destapa Un Filin” and 1 colab with King David “El Bori del Dembow” and La Moyeta “Dinero”. I am proud of my accomplishments and my family. I am incorporating my American and Dominican roots in my music.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love to do car sing-along. I put the music really loud and act out the songs.
