Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Fontanez.
Hi Joel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Originally from New York City. I have been a professional barber since 2014 with my Master’s license. I have been trained in all aspects of barbering and cosmetology. Since becoming a barber I have used my platform to give back, by partaking in various community service efforts, such as “cutting” the homeless and back-to-school events for the children in the community. I am also a college professor; teaching barbering has helped me in paving the way for aspiring future barbers. Starting Zen Barbers was a means to promote my “concierge barber” career and along the way I was able to develop and add various barbers to my team. I now own a premiere barbershop located in the heart of Orlando on International Dr. We have the pleasure of servicing clients from every part of the world and learning their stories in the process. My hopes are that Zen Barbers grows into the family and business I always hoped it could be.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am now wasn’t always the smoothest, but what journey worth taking is? Without the sleepless nights and tough financial times, the journey wouldn’t mean as much as it does. The true inspiration and fire that drove me to the finish line goes solely to my wife. Without her, my determination and drive wouldn’t of gotten me as far as I am now.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a high-end barbershop, Specializing in relaxation and tranquility for men of all ages. We offer hot towel shaves, steam facials, and all haircutting styles. We are known for treating our clients like royalty from the minute they enter the doors until the second they leave. We are proud to say that there isn’t another locally owned barbershop that can compare to our charisma and the experience we provide for our clients. one of the biggest things that set us apart from others in our area is the way we are involved in our community. From charitable events to the collaborations, we do with local artists we make sure to leave our mark on our community.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During this tragic time, we learned that we are all in this together. Learning how to comply with state laws and make our shop comfortable and safe for our clients is one of our main priorities. Being that we are a shop that caters to not only locals but international guests as well, these times have taught us that the world suffers together and that just one haircut can lift the spirits of anyone who has been affected.
