Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariet Ostos.
Hi Mariet, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Dreamer, worker, motivator, and leader; are just a few words that describe who I am as a person. My name is Mariet Ostos, I grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, and I decided to follow in my mother’s footsteps and legacy to study Accounting. On January 16, 2000, I discovered that I was pregnant; I was 19 years old. This had changed my entire life and compromised everything I had at the time. With the conditions in which my country, I had to decide for the future of my daughter. I had to solve the problem quickly, so I decided to move to another country alone. I had visited Atlanta, Georgia before, but when I was put in the position of choosing, I knew this was where I wanted to live. I moved in with a thousand dollars in my pocket and a bundle full of dreams. I lived in a shelter for 6 months because I was homeless; the lady in charge offered me a place to live in exchange for work because I had no legal documents at the time to work; that was the first time someone gave me a chance, it gave me hope and determination to move on. I lived there for 6 months until I realized I had to get out and start my own journey. It was a rough start, I cleaned houses, bathrooms, and offices. No matter what I did, I never lost focus on my goal of having my own business. I never stopped dreaming; giving up was never an option.
After years of studying tax law, in May 2007 I took the first step and started my own tax preparation service in Atlanta. In 2009 I was hired to do a market study of the state of Florida; Orlando was a fast-growing city, and I didn’t hesitate to move and prosper in this new city. I moved to Orlando in 2010, ready to help a new community and broaden my horizons. I had to start from scratch, knock on doors explaining my services, and spread my name. About 5 years later, I noticed that several people started coming to my office for advice and support. I decided to make a change and make an impact on the people in my life. In 2014 I received my Personal Coaching license, later I received an Emotional Intelligence certificate, and then I was inspired to join the John Maxwell team. This was a way to get the knowledge I needed to teach leadership and set my standards, I learned ways how to give tools to live happier and stress-free.
In 2015, I was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by the Emotional Intelligence Society. In early 2016-2021, I received the best tax preparation office award, given by the best business in Orlando. Acquiring these awards has positively impacted my drive to help others. Later in 2016, I decided to start leadership and motivational classes to influence my community. In 2021 I was selected by success magazine as the person who has made long-lasting, positive change in people`s life; success 125 most influential person. Seeing the people I love and care for achieve their dreams and giving them the hope they need to move forward is the most wonderful feeling. I will continue day by day helping people giving them power, dreams, and the tools to understand that if you love yourself, you can do anything your heart desires; that is my legacy.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles were first balance to have a child at a young age, dealing with how to learn a new language, and studying for a career that helps me grow as a professional in a new country. After that, I started to find ways to help my community solve a problem. On 2002 when I did my 2001 tax return the person that I paid for that service did fraud on my tax return which cost me $1500.00 to pay to the IRS for that mistake, I saw the opportunity to be a solution for anybody else that I knew was going thru of what I had to go through.
Also, I started at a young age which was one of the hardest troubles that I encounter in my career, was difficult for people to take me seriously and trust my advice.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I am going to tell you something that I apply in my life, and I tell everyone to do. Find somebody who has done already what you want to do. For professionals to do the same, find people that have knowledge by experience more than by title or only studies. Experience is very important
