Rising Stars: Meet Megan Johnston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Johnston.

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started playing golf in Northern Ireland at the age of 5 because my grandfather was the manager of my local club: Ballyclare golf club Played for the Northern Irish/Irish teams as a junior. Moved to Missouri state for a division one college scholarship. Won conference and was named on the all-conference team. Coached at Maine golf and tennis academy my sophomore summer with tour putting record holder Kenny Knox. Moved to Arizona after college to play cactus tour and work with my mentor, golf digest top 50 golf instructor Tim Mahoney. Then moved to Orlando for my husband’s job, working on building the Star Wars land at Disney. I started at the country club of Orlando. When they closed for renovation, I began full-time teaching the village’s area and joined the first tee of central Florida. Teaching adults in the morning and juniors in the evenings. I then moved to king’s ridge golf course. A 36-hole retirement golf community in Clermont where I was the director of instruction from 2019-22. After having my second daughter in 2022, I have moved to the golf skills coaching team at Orange County National in the winter garden.

I have 2 daughters, Eleanor (2) and Anna (2 months) a chocolate lab named divot, and live on the lake with my husband Kyle in Clermont. I am a writer for womensgolf.com, ambassador for foreladies golf, and content creator for coterie Lpga south East treasurer, LPGA new member committee, US kids certified, and top 50 honorable mention list 2021, first tee of central Florida coach of the year 2021, and level 3 certified. And girls golf co-site director for girl’s golf first tee central Florida. A monthly program for female golfers, no experience necessary, clubs provided themed golfing events across central Florida. Empowering girls through the game of golf. I am an LPGA Class A certified instructor. I have 3 students going to our US kids’ world championship, and 5 students went to the Florida world senior games with Dee Fry taking home gold in 2022

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was raised by my grandparents; when my grandfather passed away when I was 16 golf became very difficult for me. My uncle then passed away of rare cancer so I ended up flying home at the end of my junior fall year and tried to take classes online. And my grandmother passed away 2 days before my wedding. But I named my first daughter Eleanor after my grandmother. Being a female in a male-dominated industry is also challenging, my teaching talent often gets questioned, but fortunately, I let the coaching speak for itself. Balancing motherhood with a career is also challenging, but it’s this way for everyone.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in juniors group instruction and working with those with physical ailments that can restrict traditional swings. I simplify the complicated golf swing to the needs of my student. I am a goal-based instructor who will match your learning style to help you reach your goals in an effective and timely manner. Through my junior group instruction, I use game-based learning to improve golf fundamental skills in a fun environment that promotes self-learning. Girl’s golf is my passion project as I hope my two girls will join and love the program someday too. I also believe in the values of the first tee, teaching life skills through the game of golf, and providing funding for those who can’t afford the expenses that come with the game.

How do you define success?
Seeing my students succeed and seeing my junior programs grow. For myself, this has now changed, it used to be winning, but I’m working on this being a better life balance so I can enjoy my career but be present and provide great experiences with my daughters
