Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Morency.
Hi Alicia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From 14-17 years old, I would never leave the house without my camera. I wish I could recall what made me interested in investing in a professional camera at 14 years old, but all I can remember is that I saw everything and everywhere as a photo opportunity. When I started college, I stopped taking pictures; between work and school, photography just did not fit into my schedule, As I continued on with life, my cameras were just sitting at the back of my closet collecting dust. A few months ago, I found an old USB drive with a lot of my old photos stored on it, and I was genuinely impressed. Looking back, I can’t believe how talented I was at such a young age, and it’s crazy being able to see so much progression in just a short period of time. I was inspired. If I was able to take these type of photos as a kid, what am I capable of doing now?
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Three years ago, my family and I moved from Massachusetts to Florida, and it was the best decision. I get to see palm trees every day, I got my real estate license, and I have rekindled my love for photography. I think this is the first time I can say that life has been smooth. Even throughout covid, I’ve been fortunate enough to maintain a steady, well-paying job.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a self-taught photographer. My specialty is night and urban photography. I am not for hire; I simply take photos because it’s what I love to do. I am most proud of my ambition; there were several nights where I would travel with my camera and tripod and spend hours taking photos, even when I was just learning. What sets me apart from others is my dedication, I’ve never been frustrated over a photo that did not turn out the way I wanted it to, I always used it as motivation to just continue to practice and become better.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Never take life for granted.
