Daily Inspiration: Meet Dayshawna Cason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayshawna Cason.

Dayshawna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a Freshman at the University of Central Florida when I began doing hair after a few of my neighbors and friends asked me to help them out as a favor. They soon began to tell others that I did their hair, and many contacted me to start to do theirs. At first, it was just a hobby, and it turned into something I truly enjoyed. When I was a Sophomore, I then started to take it a bit more seriously, and by 2022, I created my own website and Ig page, @daydid.it. Now I have a stable clientele and work hard to continue to make a lot of men feel good about their hair while doing something I love, and I cannot wait to grow more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not been easy. I rapidly discovered that building a clientele is difficult, especially when styling hair for men. There can occasionally be weeks when you have no clients, which will make you want to give up. There will be moments when you doubt your ability to fulfill a client’s request, but that is why you work on perfecting your craft. It was quite difficult for me to balance school, employment, and doing hair since I had to learn how to manage my time and availability to avoid both overworking myself and undervaluing myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in natural hair styling for men and members of the loc community. By maintaining and styling male hair in its natural form, I contribute to its enhancement. I am really happy to have learned everything on my own and to educate young men every day on how to treat and appreciate their hair. My desire, perseverance, and the relationship I choose to build with my clients are what make me unique. I place a premium on quality above quantity; therefore, if it means pleasing fewer clients while doing so, I’ll take that opportunity every time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I would argue that getting my firm off the ground was mostly the result of chance. My very first customer asked me if I knew how to braid hair while I was going down the hallway of my dorm. I never would have discovered the enthusiasm I now have for doing hair if it weren’t for that particular time.
