Chef Michael Key, Jr., also known as MJ, started off his journey very rough in NYC. As time went on, He worked up the ladder at different restaurants and eateries. He played a variety of roles spanning from Bartender to Head Chef to General Manager. This expansive knowledge solidified him as a key asset in the food and beverage industry with any business he joined. In 2020, right after NYC shut down due to the pandemic, he lost his mentor and father due to Covid-19. As a coping mechanism for his grief, he and some friends started Taste of Paradise Catering. In that year throughout the pandemic, they planned many client events and catered top-of-the-line and high-quality food, drinks, and hookah products with this new business. Since he’s worked to expand the business and open new regions in Pennsylvania and Florida.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. We learned a lot about team development. Not everyone is meant to continue the journey they start with you.
Also, when you start a business, you run out of money at multiple points carrying the business through hard times. That proved to be a struggle we had to face when things didn’t go according to plan. This led to issues with consistency, keeping up with volume and demand, and more.
