Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Derico.
Hi Krystal, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I got started as an actress in 2016 when I was cast for my first role in a film as a featured actress in the film I Tried to Give Up by Ed Love. Then I started to audition for more roles in movies until I got steps closer to my dream. I was an actress in many films as an extra or feature role until Producer Jami Mac and Screenwriter Ranelle Golden gave me my first opportunity of a supporting actress in the movie “Don’t Shoot The Messenger.” A book written by Ashara Robinson, and where you can buy the book on Amazon. The movie is now on Amazon Prime and Walmart as The Breakup Masters. After I landed my supporting actress role, I knew that it was only “UP” from here. Then I got involved with acting in short films through an organization called Orlando Independent Filmmakers (OIF). I enjoyed acting in those film so much I said let me write a script and see how I do. Well, I did write a script called Demony vs Khloe in 2021, which was a horror film, and my script got selected to film and be in the competition with other filmmakers. Then I wrote another script which is a drama called Love Me, Yet Hate Me in 2022. When that short film was made, I also included a trailer and it went viral on all social media platforms. Throughout those scripts that I wrote and was able to see on the big screen in theaters, I felt such joy in my heart that I knew I have to become the next Black Female Screenwriter. Lastly, from so many people believing in me as the next black female screenwriter, I have began to get offers to write, and film movies for people and have held radio interviews. So, keep a lookout for my work on TV platforms coming soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Trying to become a screenwriter has many different obstacles. I get writer’s block a lot and have to deal with actors not showing up for roles they are cast as, but I was able to still film my movies because God placed people in my path to help me get through those times.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Besides being an actress and screenwriter, I am also a plus-size runway model, and I am the CEO of Special Proms Galore LLC which is a business that caters to the special needs/disabilities community throughout the state of Florida while creating Homecoming and Prom events in the same month as their peers in school. I am most proud of the person I am now versus when I was 18 years old. The one thing that sets me apart from others is by me being a go-getter and believing in myself; I know I will become a well-known person from the work I do on film and in the community.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as when you can actually say you have found your career that fits you, you don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck, and you can enjoy life with your love ones without having to worry about bills. You have became a successful person.
