Rising Stars: Meet Dev Pagan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dev Pagan.

Hi Dev, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I bought my first camera on Black Friday of 2016 and that was what jump started my photography journey. I started photographing everything, from plants to cityscape, I just wanted to capture everything. However a year later was when I started portraiture and it’s what I’ve stuck with since.

I realized with portraits, there was no limit to what you could really do, with the only true curb being your imagination. The most striking moments of this were the people I’ve met along the way. It has always fascinated me, and it still does to this day, the amount of creative minds you come across being in the industry, giving you the opportunity to explore how others think and how they perceive different mediums of art. That’s my favorite aspect of it all. And without many of them, I would not be where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely had its ups and downs, just like anything else in life. The road to success is never a straight one, there will always be sharp turns but I think that’s how we learn and grow as individuals. The biggest obstacle have been the creative blocks. For me, I seem to have a pattern of having a streak of content thoughts, coupled with being inspired on a whim, and in my opinion, it shows in my work. Then, out of thin air, all of that fades for a bit, and I no longer have a desire to create or shoot. I come to realize however, that this is normal. After talking to a lot of other fellow artists and photographers, I never feel alone when I go through it. It’s a natural cycle for most, and it comes and goes. I try to constantly surround myself with like-minded individuals and it definitely helps. The best remedy for this? Music and Pinterest – together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do conceptual photography as well as fashion and editorial, however I started in conceptual because I’m inspired by music and film a lot, and I like to incorporate storytelling into my work. I hope to translate this into filmmaking in the near future and eventually direct feature-length movies. From what I’ve been told, my work is known to have multiple meanings to it, and I’m always interested in hearing what goes through someone’s head when looking at one of my photos up close. I try to treat most of my work like it’s a film, creating characters with their own arcs and backstories to give the project more layers. I think that’s what sets me apart.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Create what makes you happiest. Art is what you make it out to be and we should be doing it for ourselves first, always.
