Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanisa Torres.
Hi Yanisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my artistic journey with canvas. While I dedicated most of my canvas work to helping local charities raise funds for community needs, I grew a desire to try out other mediums. This lead me to human canvas, face painting! Finally, the day came when my son challenged me to sculpt a tiny nose from play putty. That’s when I discovered I could create something real in a small form and fell in love with the process. Since then, I have incorporated all my new skills into tiny foods made into various earrings, accessories, magnets, trinkets, and such!
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My greatest challenge is a focused eye, steady hands, and the apparent time it takes to make each detail; managing time between work, family life, and studio time has always been challenging. There were learning curves to work through with materials “wasted,” but even the failed attempts were a success to grow from!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The goal has always been to shift all my focus to studio work, but in today’s changing market, I still uber to make ends meet. Although I’m known most recently for my tiny polymer clay creations, I am proud of my involvement in using my canvas art for charity work. I dream of my tiny creations doing the same in raising funds for charities too. My focused attention to detail is what sets my work apart. Or it’s the meditation process and all the love I put into it! Either way, I enjoy the whole process of creating something unique and lovely!
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
- First, if you say you can, you will, and if you say you can’t, you won’t! Start with a positive attitude!
- Second, don’t let the lack of all materials stop you from starting! If the passion is there, the materials will eventually pop up. So, start with what you have.
- Third, free information is available online for whatever craft you want to learn. Start by watching videos and practicing different techniques until you find the methods that work for you!
- Fourth, you get good at what you practice, so keep practicing until you’ve mastered it, one skill at a time!
- And lastly, don’t compare your art to other artists; instead, one up your own craft. Once you have a niche, explore it and have fun flying in your creativity!
