Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordana Rosen. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Dr. Jordana Eisenstein Rosen’s childhood dream was to become a veterinarian. She started volunteering at a local animal shelter when she was just 10 years old. She always felt that being a veterinarian was her true calling. In 2005 she graduated from Ross University, and her dream became a reality. She worked as an associate for a short period before becoming a partner in owning a small animal hospital. Dr. Rosen enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, including preventive care, diagnostics, and surgery. Her real joy, however, is creating an environment where personal growth is encouraged and realized.
Dr. Rosen is committed to redirecting the narrative of the veterinary profession. After selling the practice in 2016, she explored what the veterinary field had to offer and was ultimately saddened by the lack of enthusiasm and respect for the profession. At that time, she realized that it was up to her to be the change. Her goal is to make once again this the profession of choice and trust. She wants to put her colleagues at the forefront of this change and make sure that they feel safe, supported, and confident to change this profession from the inside for generations to come.
Dr. Rosen has opened Urgent Care clinics inside Petsmarts in Illinois and Florida to bridge the gap in coverage between general practice and emergency clinic veterinarians. She hopes this partnership with local veterinarians will ease their burden and allow a healthier work-life balance. Most importantly, it will be another avenue for pets that need to be taken care of.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is there such a thing as a smooth road? All joking aside, today’s world is not what it was when I graduated from veterinary school. With the internet and social media rise, our profession has changed dramatically. Our clients have access to information they didn’t before, this can be amazing, as they can educate themselves, but it also presents the challenge of knowing that not all information you read on the internet is true! Social media has allowed clients to deal with their frustrations from the comfort and safety of being behind a screen. This dehumanization of conflict resolution has negatively affected veterinary mental health and well-being.
We’ve been impressed with EVS Urgent Care, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The veterinary industry as a whole is seeing an unprecedented caseload. The last thing a primary care veterinarian wants is to tell their clients that they do not have the time to visit their pets. At the same time, the cost that ensues at the emergency clinics is only sometimes necessary and feasible for pet parents. EVS is here to provide a helpful alternative. EVS Urgent Care is a daytime urgent care facility. EVS will partner with general practice and emergency room veterinarians to see the patients they may not have the space to care for immediately. These are patients who do not have emergencies but who do need to be seen now.
Examples include:
Ear/eye- problems, infections
Skin problems – itching, lumps, bumps
Lameness
Vomiting/diarrhea
Urinary tract concerns
Stable neurologic disease
Behavioral
We operate similarly to a referral center. After a patient’s visit to our facility, a discharge instruction and the medical record will be sent back to the regular veterinarian for follow-up care. We do not perform any preventive care, such as vaccinations, nor carry any preventive medications, such as heartworm or flea and tick prevention. We will also not perform any preventive surgical procedures, including dentistry. All of these services will be referred back to the general practice clinic to be completed or referred to a specialty center if it is outside their scope.
Our client-facing goal is to be an alternative to the emergency room when your pet needs to be seen but your vet cannot fit you into the schedule that day. Our goal vet facing is to change the narrative. EVS wants veterinarians to remember why they got into this profession in the first place. We recognize that the demographic of veterinarians today is not what it was 20 years ago! We need to adapt, change, and make a difference now. Our #WeAreTheChange is my commitment to the veterinary profession to make a difference for current and future veterinarians.
Alright, before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
We are looking for individuals ready to make a positive change in the veterinary community.
