Today we’d like to introduce you to Jatzelys Camilo.
Hi Jatzelys, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a kid growing up I admired all forms of art. Baking was an art that simply blew my mind, I’d always watch all these baking cook off shows and was mesmerized. During the pandemic which affected many I was left without a job and free time with nothing to do. It was my love for traditional Puerto Rican desserts that inspired me to start my small baking business. From making Flan to Tres Leches to taking on new desserts like Pumpkin Bread which surprisingly became my best seller. Now I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished and hope to own a bake shop one day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With the changes going on in the world it hasn’t been easy, I lost many of my consistent customers due to them moving out of state due to the pandemic amongst other things. Some seasons are slow and others such as the holidays are busier. I think what’s important to me is being consistent, spreading my business name around and just enjoying my time baking.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Although I run my small baking business, I am actually another “9-5” employee just like many other people around me. It’s important to me that on my days off I study and educate myself on how to grow my business as well as reach more people. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come however I am most proud of seeing the faces on my customers when they take their first bite. I would say my most popular desserts would be my Tres Leches and my Pumpkin Bread. As time has passed I’ve added other desserts that have been a bit such as my Cinnamon French Toast Roll Ups and my Brownie Heath Trifle cups,
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I had so many interests but what they all had in common was Art. Art can be expressed in so many ways and I would always find myself drawing or painting or watching competition bake off shows. I remember always going to my local Panederia with my mom and just staring through the glass cases at the desserts thinking to myself “how do they even decorate these things!?” It was funny because it was just me smiling ear to ear into a glass. That feeling is a feeling I’ll hold onto forever and that’s the exact feeling I want Delicias by Jally’s customers to feel.
