Check Out Octavio Hurtado Colls’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavio Hurtado Colls.

Hi Octavio; thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am an immigrant from Venezuela. I came to the US in 2015 to escape the dictatorship’s persecution. I started washing dishes in a restaurant, then in telemarketing, and then I did Uber, Lyft, and Amazon Flex for more than 5 years, while in my mind, they developed ideas of what I would like to do and what I would not. My passion is flying airplanes, so I did the pilot course while earning money by working more than 90 hours a week doing Uber and Lyft. Today I have my commercial airplane pilot license, but I don’t practice the career because to be hired, it is necessary to have a minimum of 750 flight hours, which takes time and money. I studied Economics in Venezuela and a Master’s in Finance, which is my other passion, so I took a stock trading course; today, it is one of the professions that I do very well after taking a lot of hits, like all newbies. Real Estate is something that I am also passionate about, I did my Agent course, and I am currently also working in this area with my Broker, My Florida Real Estate Group.

Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an immigrant at the beginning is difficult, but you must work hard on your personal growth and control of emotions; sometimes, my eyes are still watery because walking the road is only harder than if you were accompanied. Working many hours, resting as little as possible, fulfilling your responsibilities, studying, and helping your family in Venezuela. All that sticks, but when you think about what you have achieved and how much it would have cost me in time in my country, that makes me happy. The language was the first thing I had to overcome to study and emerge in this country.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today I have 2 jobs that I do together. I am a stock trader and a Real Estate Agent. Humbly, I have several favorable qualities: discipline, focus, staying away from distractions, and seeking professional and personal growth. Being able to master things that are not easy or common for everyone makes me proud. I speak English; I can fly a plane (small for now), and know how to make money in the stock market (lose it, too, hehe). I managed the American dream of buying a house and not wearing myself out working; it can be said that I have some financial freedom. It also fills me with pride that if I go out to Uber or deliver Amazon boxes, I do it without a problem. Being a Real Estate Agent is also a source of pride for me.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think everything has its touch of risk; doing an Uber can be dangerous due to a crash, and you are disabled, or someone attacks you, and you can die or be seriously ill. Being a pilot carries great risk for different reasons, but passion drives you to bear that risk. Being a Real Estate Agent carries its risk. You could be attacked by showing a house; you never know. Trading stocks carries the risk of losing money. I remember when I lost my first $500 starting and needed it to pay for my flight instruction hours, I felt very depressed. But you need to take the risk and beat them to advance.
